I just know it will be requested.

Note:  I do not support this at all.  Just stating the facts

It was INTENDED for mapping several keystrokes to one key.  It made it nice for things like flying a B17, one keystroke as you approached target could

1) chop throttle
2) deploy flaps
3) open doors
4) jump to bombsight

HOWEVER... macros became a way of chest thumping when the kiddies learned that they could also make automatically generated radio text on the open channel.  This of course resulted in stuff like "Mavrick splashes another... ToPGuNz SqUaDrOn" flooding the radio buffer.  Some of them got pretty annoying, some were funny, but thank goodness they weren't used much in the Full Realism arenas.

In all honesty, it's not so different than the victory messages we have in the buffer in AH.  Except that HiTech's messages aren't player controlled AND they aren't nearly as annoying  :D

What Alpo said! But it's worse in the "RR" context. Probably best explained by a screen shot whihc I don't have but it's all basically radio blurts like, ""I'm duh man!" "I roxor U!!!"  "Choke on my lead and die suckuh!"

Depends (hehe). In the RR arena it was an all too common sight in the text buffer. Announcing that one got a kill, usually with some phrase or squad slogan that was considered extremely funny by the author (and others the first dozen or so times if it actually was).

There were a few "legitimate" uses, though, I reckon - dropping troops, navigation, etc.

I would seriously weigh the advantages and disadvantages first. Picture this:

Dweeb: "Crack em! Smack em! Stick em on my shish-ki-bob! KILL! 789th Mega Destroyer Sqwad!"

Dweeb 2: "I phart in your general deerection you EEnglich ka-nig-it! KILL 456th Monkey Humpers!"

Dweeb 3: "Was it good for you? Sure was good for me! KILL! 345th pimple popper unit."

over and over and over

Of course, that's what channel 2+ was designed to avoid. (Then there was the guys who macroed 2. Argh!

Well, from what I've seen from some of the AW crowd and apparently 'tis these RR guys you speak of, this wouldn't be much of a problem here. Seems to me in order to get those kill messages one would have to obtain a kill first?  :D

What was the purpose of the macro in AW ?
-------------------------------------------

Macros had many uses in AW--being able to fire off many keystrokes with one is just a darn handy thing to be able to do.

But when you say 'Macro' and 'Air Warrior' in the same breath, only one thing comes to the mind of most people, KILL MACROS!

In AW, it wasn't announced 'who' got the kill, instead, you would see:

A Kill has been recorded.
anRky shot down.

in the text buffer if you got the kill, and everyone else would just see:

anRky shot down

so if you wanted everyone else to know you got the kill, you'd need to fire off a kill macro.

I, personally, had nothing against kill macros (as long as they didn't exceed one line), but they were generally frowned upon by most other 'elitist FR snobs'

The best kill macros were used as part of an online persona, and many people fired off kill macros to announce kills for their squad, but mostly they were just a way to stroke your ego.

Since the AH host does the ego-stroking for not only the victor, but the victor's squad, kill macros would be redundant for any of the 'ego-stroking' types.

Now 'Death Macros'!  There's an idea.  Since AH goes the 'luvy-duvy' route of not announcing to the arena the name of the victim, I think we need to take the job on ourselves!

hmm, it'd be decent for macroing dot commands that you use frequently.

/macro .squelch jerk1 .squelch jerk2 .... .squelch jerkn

I see benefits there.   :D

How does that differ from programming macro into your controller?
