rubber bullets question
« on: July 13, 2002, 07:00:37 PM »
latly I've a feeling of rubber bullets on my planes (mostly the 0.5 guns). even with the p-47 I need to get a very long burst with lots of sprites to get something to fall off the bandit. alot of times I get the bandit covered with sprites and I leave him to drop, but they go on flying.

could this effect be related to the "switched to TCP" thing? I'm now being switched to TCP every time a few minutes after logging in.

but I probably just suck.

"switched to tcp" means your connect has gone south.  For rubber bullets, check to see if you have v-sync disabled.

My bullets are always rubber....but I have been switched to TCP about 1000% more than ever lately.

How would locking refresh rate to frame rates cause or solve the rubber bullet syndrome,  especially since 'rubber bullet sysndrome' is usually caused by laggy connections?

If AH had the option of disabling local hits, I think that would go a long way in helping to eliminate the rubber bullet syndrome.

akak I am not sure of the reason for v-sync causing this but this has been a longstanding belief therefor perhaps there is some truth to it.   There are other old threads that can explain this if you dig deep enough.

Nowadays I run v-sync off exclusively with no problems though

That's a new one on me, never heard of having V-sync on causing a problem like that.  For the few years I was an AWAR techie on AW, the causes for rubber bullets was lag on either the host or client side, or local hits was enabled on the client FE.  Don't ever recall hearing or reading that V-Sync was the culprit.  Only problems that I know that are caused by V-Sync is the occasional tearing of the texture seams with V-Sync disabled.

Was just using AW as an example of the causes of Rubber Bullet Syndrome.  My bet is that the rubber bullet syndrome players are seeing are actually local hits on their FE that aren't seen by the host or they've got a laggy connection.

V-Sync ?

Skurj: V-Sync ? As in video settings ?

If so, what effect would this have ?

- Hosed down a LA-7 recently, hit him good w/13mm MGs and at least 3x30mm, no smoke, no signs of damage whatsoever. He began to outrun me, so i hosed him from 200yds to about 500 with all my remaining MG rounds... no effect....

Also, the damage-lag seems to have gotten worse recently, HO'd a tiffie and the bullets "struck" my plane a good 3 secs after the pass.

yes there is an increase in lag time here, with jaboing, I am egressing from a PT or Vh after dropping, and I there's a solid 2-3 second lag before I get the kill message.

Definitely, not fun to egress from a PT boat, expecting to get lit up by him, not knowing that he already dead :(

And I thought it was just me.

I don't know if this is related or not, but my hit percentage has gone from a poor 6% to a VERY poor 2.5%.  I find I have two problems with gunnery under 1.10 that I didn't have under 1.09:

1.  Missing targets completely from 500 yards on the cons 6, even though it looks (to me) like a good shot.  Almost as if he is there, but is not really there.

2.  When I do hit him hard (i.e., a good burst with the 47Ds guns), I get localized sprites (i.e., I'm not spraying all over his airframe), but nothing seems to come off.  As an example, I lit up a Zeke from 400 yards with a good 2 second burst on, what seemed to me at least, his left wing, and he got away no worse for the experience.  Adding insult to injury, when he did go down all I got was the assist.

And before you ask, I fly with convergence between 425 and 500.

Yesterday was a proud day.  I was indirectly accussed of cheating by a P51 driver who had pinged my 109 on about 3 snap shots before he managed one that took a wingtip off.

In all, during that fight against a P51, an F4U and an F4F (All over but the shouting, huh?) I think I was pinged, i think, 5 times before the one that took me down.

I was surprised to take that many pings from the 50's without a pilot wound or smoke but stuff happens and sometimes you get lucky.  Frankly I'm glad to see that the damage model does give spurious results from time to time.  I think that more realistic and more interesting than "X calibre does Y damage and so will always cause Z result after N hits in area A on plane P."

(Sure ticks me off when it is my bullets that are rubber though. :p )

I never wanted to say something but I'm experiencing the samething this 1.10 version. Within 400 of a con and I can't hit anything most of the time. I just sit there saying "You gotta be kidding me". Wonder if there is truely some issue at hand.

Perhaps one of the people that brought this up in the past could post an explanation, I am just stating what I have seen on this BBS in the past
