This has been brought up many times before, but it's good to kick it up every once in a while... it's a great idea.

Feissler Storch, Lysanders, PBYs, Kingfishers, C-47s, Hoverfly, PT boats, M3... so many great possibilities. Give points for pilots rescued. If a perk pilot gets shot down, he can wait for rescue... pilot gets half of lost perks back, rescue pilot gets other half.

Many many moons ago, the Buccs did a mission that involved a SAR scenario.  One of our guys, Buhdman, bailed out on purpose near an enemy VH.  Another Buccaneer took a TBM, while the rest of us took P-38's.  The plane was to swoop in and kill the VH, then CAP the area while the TBM landed and "rescued" Buhdman.  The only downside was, that Buhdman had to .ef before he could join the TBM pilot's crew, but it was fun to simulate anyway.  I'd love to see this kind of capability, where the downed pilot got to keep his perks if rescued, while the rescuing pilot would get a big perk bonus.

During the original Tour of Duty, we had a guy (Greybeard, I think) get shot down.  I had created and run the TOD (not the same as the TOD of today, which is squad based), so I was CM'ing.  If you got shot down in a TOD mission, you could no longer fly TOD missions (though you could volunteer for the OPFOR), and Greybeard was just one mission shy of completing the requesit five mission in a row when he was shot down.  His team mates asked me if they could attempt to rescue him, so that he could continue flying the current TOD, so I said "sure."

He walked for about 45 minutes to get far enough away from an enemy base for the goon to attempt to land next to him and "pick him up."  The rescue goon would then have to fly him safely back to friendly territory.  Unfortunately, while the goon was only a minute or two out, someone upped a fighter from that nearby base, spotted him on the ground, and strafed him.  Even though it was heartbreaking that Grey was KIA, everyone enjoyed the immersion of trying to save him.  Because the stakes were relatively high (i.e. if rescued he could continue flying in the remaining TOD missions), it really made it more real for everyone envolved.

My squaddies (Buccaneers) proposed this idea many moons ago. We even spent some squad nights simulating this kind of mission. One pilot would fly deep into enemy territory and either ditch or bail. We would then escort a goonie or two to attempt a rescue. Besides the inherent entertainment value, it kept the enemy country wondering  WTF was happening!

I love this idea (always liked the idea of maybe down the road flying a Catalina to do this), and loathe as I am to toss cold water. . .

. . .it probably won't work in the MA.  The main reason being that in the MA most people are shot down in the middle of, or on the margins of, large furballs.  Its suicide to bring a goon into that environment half the time, let alone a rescue ship.

That said, I could definitely see this being on the cards for TOD or scenarios, maybe even the CT depending.

So if you ever need a Catalina pilot. . .

Oh, wait, we have to have a Catalina first.:(

I love this idea. We could use the current plane set. Ever heard of the Goon?

Great for rough landings, short takeoff distance. But to be fair, lets make it so a rescue pilot gets X perks for pulling in the hero.

The Storch pilot would have a large flask with him, mmm weizenkorn.
It can go 100 mph you wouldnt have to wait that long. Now if you add the Storch you can also add Artillery!!! Imagine floating around in that little plane calling in arty on those yellow/green crunchies!
Bis endlich der Fiend am Boden liegt.
Bis Bishland bis Bishland bis Bishland wird besiegt!

Nah...we wouldnt do that.  Squad doctrine dictates that you only use machine guns on chutes.  You save the cannon rounds for aircraft.   :D

great idea.

It'd also be cool if vehicle supplies could repair/rearm aircraft too.  Get m3's setting up makeshift air-fields to support attacks!

This'll be very cool if HTC puts in the FPS idea HT talked about in a interview. Imagine you need to sneak out to be rescue. Like in the movie BAT-21.

You'll be only armed with your 45 and have a radio. Yeah, this'll be very cool indeed.

I like this idea, but I don't see it implemented in MA any time soon.

Great idea, in fact that is what im waiting for to be implimented into WWIIonline.

I think that AH would have to make chutes impervious to gun fire or it will be very frustrating when pilots start shooting chutes.

At the moment as shooting a chute gtes the pilot nothing and the downed pilot cant really do much but return to tower, the honor system thast obeyed by 99% of the comunity in NOT shooting chutes works well.

If a doned pilot can be rescued and take up gunnery positions in 2 or more seater aircraft we may see this honor system go out the window, and that whould be bad for everyone who actually bails out.

Once your in the rescueing aircraft your fair meat.

Great idea, please insert this in 1.11 :D
