some of those numbers were low because the germans slow in delivering the damiler benz engines. i think i remember reading somewhere that there were 200 more RE 2005 airframes produced than finished planes due to engines not showing up

Well, actually the initial batch of DB605A provided by the germans and the following italian production were more than enuff to build a quite large force of Series 5 fighters (C205, Re2005 and G55, that is).

The real problems were:
- italian high command stupidity and delay in choosing which fighter to produce,
- what FIAT did to push his fighter (the G55) or, better, to delay the production of Macchi fighters (yes, the Agnelli family is the same of 60 years ago),
- in the end, allied bombing of italian factories.

Its a sad story, the saddest part being a lot of young pilots fighting with old C.200, C.202 and some C.205 against B-17, Spitfires IX, P51, P38 and P47 :(
"And one of the finest aircraft I ever flew was the Macchi C.205. Oh, beautiful. And here you had the perfect combination of italian styling and german engineering .... it really was a delight to fly ... and we did tests on it and were most impressed." - Captain Eric Brown
