The more I read this thread the more I kick myself for forgetting some great bands or people.

Like
Songwriting -
Carol King
Paul Simon
Brian Wilson (Beach Boys)

Vocals -
Beach Boys - duh! Maybe even at the top of this list.
Jefferson Airplane - OK just Grace Slick then
Janis Joplin - Blues Queen
Temptations - Oh yea
Faruq Freddie Bulsara (Freddy Mercury)

Originality -
The Beach Boys again. Invented the genre and the "concept album".

Info I got says "Who Sell Out was broadcast 1st on 12/27/66, but not released as an album until 12/16/67. Pet Sounds was 1966, but I don't have specific date.

Wow, where to even begin.

At the top of the heap, in no particular order:

Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Jimmy hendrix
Nirvana
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Smashing Pumpkins

Pretty Dammed Good, in no particular order:

The Sex Pistols
The Who
Velvet Underground
The Neil Young and Crazy Horse
Grateful Dead
Beatles
Janis Joplin
Queen
The Smiths
Iron Maiden
Ozzy/Sabbath
DKs
Fear
Black Flag
Elvis Costello
The Ramones
Johnathan Richmond
Tull (going to see in a few weeks actually)
Pre-Disco Stones
Dire Straits
Mignight Oil
Boston
Rush

I somehow, with the exception of some metal and punk, managed to miss most of the 80s music scene. I noticed one day: "Hey, WTF happened to the guitars? Is that a drum machine? This is as bad as disco!" :) Floyd and Zep kept me happy until Nirvana. What a loss Kurt was, up there with the other greats who burned out much too young.

The Ramones? Well ok, they were one of the 1st punk bands, but they really were quite bad.

I saw the Ramones in the UCSB (Santa Barbara) Gym back in 1976. My buddy wanted to get an autographed 45 (thats a record for all you babies) and while we stood in line, one of us commented on what a bunch of sweetheart bags the Ramones were. When we got to the front of the line, the guy signing the 45 looked at my bud and said "sweetheart bags huh?" Then he laughed and wrote "We ain't no duche bags" on the record. (Misspelling and all). That 45 was framed and placed on the wall of reverence in my buddies Isla Vista apartment.

RIP Joey

Hell so many to choose from but.....

Chuck Berry  - All catagories (Ok forget "My dingaling")

BB King

John Lee Hooker
(Ok Blues/RnB out of the way)

Black Sabbath (I still don't think any other band can imitate their sound).

Deep Purple (Gillan, Lord, Paice (Sp)? Blackmore) Lineup

ELP (Showed all the other 70's "Synth" bands how it should be done)

Alice Cooper (Creativity/Originality - Just go see him live)

Rolling Stones (You can't stay up there for 40 years without being at least a bit good -Whoops slipped back into RnB) :D

Grateful Dead, Are they still alive?

Mike Oldfield (For originality)

Jimi Hendrix

Lynard Skynard (A sound all of there own)

Dory Previn (Who)??? :p (One of a kind - trust me)

Artists like Clapton, Gary Moore, Mark Knophler (Sp)? all worthy of a mention but only as masters of their art not as originators

TTFN

Hey MT, rock and roll isn't all about being good musicians and having high production values :) I still get a kick out of Rockin' Roll High School! whenever it's on. And, as you say, there were a proto punk band with a lot of influence for the genre.

If the Ramones had not toured England in 1975,there would have been no Sex Pistols,The Clash..etc...Hugely influential band..
