2 breakthroughs with AH...
« on: July 26, 2002, 12:52:18 PM »
Everyone knows of the lockup bug, right? Sure you do. It's a huge pain (Or WAS anyway). It's caused by (for me) not having the newest DirectX installed. Check DXDiag.exe and if you don't have Version 8.1b, that's probably what's ailin' ya. Fixed it completely for me.

It gets better.

Question #1: What weighs very little but makes you fall off your chair?
Question #2: What makes you dizzy with vertigo, but doesn't give you a headache like so many others of its kind?
Question #3: What makes you able to turn Icons off completely in AH because you don't need some number telling you how far away a con is when you can truly SEE - maybe almost reach out and touch - the plane you are chasing?

Answer to 1, 2, and 3....EDimensional Glasses! Yeah so this is OT and it's big advertising but who cares. I'm wondering if anyone here uses these and what their experience with them was.
I am NEVER going back to plain old "flat 3d" ever again. With these glasses, when you swoop your Spit9 down to fly through a hanger, You can't help but jerk your head back because it seems like you'll hit it on the roof of the hanger! Really! My accuracy has actually improved too! I can actually get a real sense of depth and distance, so I can line up my shots a thousand times better. And for only $70? I know I couldn't say no.
I'd highly suggest to anyone really serious about gaming to check this site out.

LCD Shutter Glasses? They've been around for years.

Want some real 3D action? Check this out, http://www.iisvr.com

I used to own a VFX-1, theres REAL stereoscopic stuff for you (seperate displays for each eye = no flicker), plus head tracking. Can't wait for the new stuff to be released.

Why didnt you add the "Click in the next ten minutes and recieve a free Mug!"  It couldn't get any more infomercial-ish than it already is.  ;)

Look, if you want some believable advertising on this board, you need to blend in a bit, act like you've been here for a while.  Try this:

    Be a condecending, pompous ass.
    Be a condecending, trolling ass.
    Be an ass.
(There arent that many tulips here really.)
Include:  Chicken pot pie, QUAH!, Toonga!, Sheep, goats, beavers, or other furry creatures.
Insult Lazer and/or his mother in some way, shape or form.
Mention gunman26/42, the goon_MAW incident, or Ripsnort's odor problem, or something relatively AH-exclusive.  (Wait, Rip's condition is common knowledge...:D )[/list]
Have a go another time, good try nonetheless.

Seriously, the single most largest break through which simply outweighs every patch combined.... was the introduction of ambient/external sound effects.

No patch. no FM correction, no new plane was quite as shocking as the introduction of those sounds!

Ooooh.. I remember the day I first began hearing in the tower the roar of the engines, chugging start-ups, frightening thunder as enemy planes stormed the field...

That, IMO, is the largest breakthrough AH ever had.

I'm cornfused.  Is the new stuff the X-viewer?  Cuz they are saying the vfx3d is discontinued.  If this stuff is so great, why did the vfx3d die after only 2 years?

How much is this stuff??

A lot of years, a buddy had a pair for his Amiga 1000 in 85 or 86. They worked great.

What it does is, the LCD shutters alternate eyes, while synced with the computer.  The video drivers display alternating frames offset slightly, so that one eye sees one image, and the other eye sees the other.

Kinda cool, kinda stupid, I'll wait for head-tracking, helmet mounted, high-res displays to be cheap.  I can't wait untill i can look around just by looking around. :P

If you get less than 120fps or so(60fps per eye)  you'll want to maybe think twice.  If you cant run at a 120hz refresh rate, dont even bother.

They have been around a long time.  MaximumPC magazine did a review of some glasses I think this last issue.  They found that for alot of people they cause headaches with extended use  Besides that  they are likely not very good at all for your eyes.

Yes, the X-view is due out end of this year, around $599 US RRP. Its supposed to have high res LCDs (either 800x600 or 640x480).

The VFX1 and 3D were around $1500. The VFX-3D was just a mod to the -1, the helmet is relatively heavy for some people, and the displays are fairly low res (640x240 from memory). 3D video cards just plain outran it in spec.

I used to play EF2000, Flight Unlimited I & II, Terra Nova, System Shock, and Commanche 3 with it. Commanche 3 even supported full sterescopic :)
