Use SSH.  Putty is a free program that allows some other fun things like X11 tunneling (if you need to use X windows) through SSH.

The security problems of un-encrypted connections are wildly overblown.  95% of the time, stolen credit card, or passwords are either from a trojan on the users machine, or a hacked server.

It's become like a firewall.  A usefull tool that many like to pretend will save them from the big bad hackers.  Too bad most of the time they're wrong.
