Moratorium on bombers
« on: August 10, 2002, 10:55:07 AM »
Another screen freeze last night, one from which I was unable to escape short of hitting the reset button. When the machine rebooted I got a unable to find file error (hive, was registry corruption) and could not boot the machine.

I am running XP but Win9x, NT and 2000 are also susceptible to registry corruption. I was able to repair the machine through a tedious registry restore this morning.

Many believe the screen freezes are related to bombers. There was a buff formation in sight being attacked when I froze last night.

A suggestion, don't fly buffs or don't attack buffs, long enough to see if the problem with screen freezing diminishes.

I think your right Iron. All of my screen freezes occur when attacking buffs. Twice while at 5 in. on CV. Once in the air. In the last week.

As a counterpoint to your position, last night I had a large number of screen freezes;

1) Flying a B-26 formation to attack A10. My screen froze just as I hit the pickle switch to drop on the VH. After approximately 5 seconds, it resumed, but I discovered that I had lost both of my drones.

2) Twice while strafing the training camp north of A10. In both cases, my aircraft appeared to be continuing to fly while the screen was frozen, because my position jumped suddenly when my screen unfroze; the second time, I continued to 'maneuver' during the frozen screen, and didn't have to make a sudden course correction to avoid the cumulogranite clouds.

3)  While on approach to landing at A9; again, manipulating the stick as if I was still flying normally prevented me from augering in.

4) Taking off from A9 in an IL-2. After the screen remained frozen for 2 minutes, I pressed Alt-F4. After another 30 seconds, just before the program exited, I saw the "Host Connection Lost" window pop up.  Interestingly, a P-51 that appeared on the runway in front of me shortly before the screen froze was iconned as being hostile.

5) Taking off from A-9 in an IL-2. Again, a P-51 appearing in front of me on the runway was iconned as being hostile before the screen froze. After about 5 seconds, the screen unfroze, and the P-51 was iconned as being friendly.

6) Flying south from A9 in an IL-2. The screen unfroze after approximately 10 seconds.

7) Strafing the training camp between A9 and A10. Screen remained frozen for two minutes, at which point I hit Alt-F4 again. Again, after about 30 seconds, the program exited, displaying the "Host Connection Lost" dialog window just before exiting.

8) Flying south from A9 in a FW-190. Screen remained frozen for two minutes, at which point I hit Alt-F4 again. Again, after about 30 seconds, the program exited, displaying the "Host Connection Lost" dialog window just before exiting.

9) Piloting a PT boat along the coast toward A10 from A9.  Screen remained frozen for approximately two minutes, then unfroze as I reached for the keyboard to press Alt-F4, at which point I found myself in the tower; I presume that I ran aground at speed while my screen was frozen.

10) Piloting a PT boat south along the coast toward A10 from A9. Screen remained frozen for approximately 20 seconds, then unfroze.

11) Piloting a PT boat south along the coast toward A10 from A9. Screen remained frozen for approximately 30 seconds, then displayed "Host Connection Lost" dialog box. This one was particularly annoying, as I was closing on firing range of the enemy CVBG. An hour's drive down the drain.

At that point, I gave up on the evening.

The screen freesze/system lockups are primarily associated with B-17 and B-26 formations.
I've not seen this happen to me with Boston, Ju-88, or Lancaster formations.
Perhaps it is because the B-17 and B-26 were the "original" AH bombers?
Have any others seen lockups when killing anything other than B-17/B-26 formations?

Had similar problems, which got me real mad after flying for ages in my Lancs to alt, right on bomb run, second I pressed the tit to drop bombs, screen freeze, then a host disconnected message after a bit,STRANGELY Whels told me it might be linked to the bomb whistle sound being corrupted,I renamed mine to 'whistleold' and havent had a lock up since, sure are a lot of strange things happenin around here :(

I haven't seen any CTD's while attacking buff formations.  Only thing I've seen during those attack runs are that of my frame rates dropping while I attack a buff formation.  My frame rates usually drop in the low-20's from the normal 85+fps and then go back to normal when the buff formation is dead.

Heck, I got a screen freeze OFFLINE in an F6F in F3 view doing strafing runs on a town with protected buildings.  Had to reset.

Granted most of my freezes are around bomber formations, though.  Typically when the drones are doing something strange.

Most of my problems seem to be CTDs, but I think that was a heat issue with the machine.  Anything CPU/graphics intensive tended to CTD me.

I've been doing pretty good.

I have had lock ups, but very few and far between.

The wierdest thing did happen in the Snap Shot last night, as flying with ramzey as observer in 109. He was shot down by B26 and he hit the water. i continued after the crash, spinning on the surface for almost 10 miles. No cockpit just spinning. i remained in contact with Bigmax and rest of arena reporting on my progress across the channel, until i CTD. I reentered the Arena with no problem.

If there is a problem than this is a pretty large one i think.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Yesterday my whole squad got a screenfreeze at the same time. All have to reboot. It's true I was attacking a Ju88 shot him down and screen freezes as Ju hit the ground but my squaddies where at other places and many knights and bishes got the screen freeze too at the same time. It was strange. As i come back Lazer said that the whole furball vanished (I hope he did not got all the kills ;) )

Well they must have got a handle on "some" of it with the last patch. I haven't had a freeze since than. My CTD's and freezes were coming regularly until the patch.

Since than I have had one CTD in the tower in the CT. And that is the first I ever had in a tower. The Main has been problem free.

They must have figured out "some" of it, but obviously not all of it.

Just before last patch I updated gf3 drivers to 29.42
Updated dx to dx 8.1b.
I only did this a day before the patch but didnt get any lockups between time. Since the patch I had only 1 lock up in CT when B of B map was on, going from tower to launch.  Ive never had ctds they have always been hard lock ups requiring hitting the reset button. Also all my films now play on film viewer. U still cant rewind them casue it locks up.
But since last patch ive been real happy becasue before it was becoming a real pain.:) :)

AKIron, I think you are right.

At first, I thought cleaning out the registry and reinstalling AH cured all that, and after I got a computer upgrade, the lock ups never bothered me.. until now.

I got my first screen freeze in weeks. Come to think of it, I am now highly suspicious I didn't get any screen freezes for a long time because it has been a long time since I've ever seen a B-26 or B-17 formation around.

As one of the planes in a B-17 blew up, I changed my view direction, and suddenly, with the explosion sound and the head movement going on simultaneously, the computer locked up.

Maybe something inside the code that gets messed up under certain specific conditions?? Such as move view point + B-17 formation + explosion sound = lock up??

I get a lot of freezes. However, I fly from carriers a great deal. Hence, I find myself fighting off raids of Ju 88s, Ki-67s and others quite frequently. So, I expect a lot of freezes as compared to most players. Expecting it and being tolerant of the problem are two different things, however.

I also get momentary freezes that last from 5 to 20 seconds. And, being very close to the sea surface, these usually result in augers.
In fact, I've suffered about 5 deaths from these.

CDTs are another issue. Last night I had 5 of them, which really porked my attack score. From reasonable to miserable in short order... Such is life, I guess. For the record, I have the latest nVidia drivers. I usually get CDTs while in the tower, but last night I had the five while flying. Add in a couple of freezes and it was trying evening.

Hopefully, HTC will get the software debugged before long. Many of my squadies simply don't show up now, because they get too annoyed at getting booted. One guy had 4 CDTs in his first 4 sorties. He was less than molified when someone suggested that "I don't get CDTs", but failed to mention that he plays only 4-5 hours a week.

By the way, I also get hard lock-ups when trying to rewind film.

My regards,

Widewing
