P-47 D-30.  People underestimate this dog.  It is a mistake :).

Man, I can't believe noone mentioned my two favorite planes - bar none:

Spit 1 and A6M2.

Nothing turns without stalling like the Spit1, and if I have to up on a massively capped field, it's always my choice. My favorite thing about it is the ability to do low speed maneuvers and line up while other fighters are wobbling all over the place as they stall out. Unfortunately with the 8 pea-shooters I get more assists than kills.

The A6M2 is a fun ride, again the guns are massively underpowered, but can that thing turn on a dime! I've also regularly outturned A6M5s with it.

Both get chewed up by anything with an E advantage, but at least you are handing minimal perkies to anyone who shoots you down, and you know darn well that you've earned every kill get.

It depends on what you mean by "underdog".  Most fighters are underdogs when compared to the P-51D, Typhoon Mk Ib, Fw190D-9, Bf109G-10, La-7, Yak-9U, N1K2-J, Spitfire Mk IX and P-38L.

If we mean underdog to those, then my favorite is the Mosquito FB.Mk VI.

If we mean slow assed, massively undergunned 1940 fighters as underdogs, then I'd pick the Spitfire Mk Ia and A6M2.

My favorite 'underdog' plane is the 109E4.  It will *almost* turn with a spit.  By almost I mean you can go around a couple turns and hose it down good (and make the dumb ones reverse so you can stay on their tail), before you start losing ground.

Only bad thing is that it is so slow that even the Spits and N1K2's can run away from it.

Exactly, the Spit1.

it's got nuttin but bbs and if you neg G the engine shuts off, oh and it's about as fast as a gooney..

I got accused of stealing a kill from a 110 before in my spit1.

I'll take that as a compliment =)

Gotta be the val for me. That thing is almost TOO much fun, heheh. Plus when ya actually get a kill in it, people tend to get a little bent out of shape... "How the hell did you kill me in THAT piece of crap???" is something I've heard a couple times, and still makes me giggle when I recall it :).
