What's your favorite 'underdog' plane?
« on: August 15, 2002, 08:07:22 AM »
Just for fun kind of post.

My favorite is the Hurricane IIC.  The 4 20mm's have a lot of punch and this plane turns really well.  Fun to take down the later war models with it.

It's especially fun when getting B & Z'd to go head on.  Those Hispanzooka's give you a good chance to take them down.  Nothing like watching the guy whine about HO's when he could have easily run away or gained enough alt to avoid it. :D

F4U-1 from a carrier deck, P-38L for doing ground work.  The 5 superplanes will eat both of them alive, so every operation has its own rewards, just don't expect to land any kills.

I'm thinking, though, that what I might start doing is flying the plane that killed me last.  That would give me a reason to finally start flying the N1k2, LA-7, P-51D (as a fighter instead of my usual ground attack), Spitfire IX (haven't flown it since my first month here), and FW-190 (or F6F - I see both about as often).

I like the LA-5 because it can dive with most aircraft in the planeset (roughly 625 mph without losing aileron authority) and it turns quite well.

F4U-1a

I only consider it an underdog because of its point-value.
It's more capable than ya'll think, and find it get's underestimated quite often.

The F4U-1 is the fastest bird from the carrier and the birdcage model seems to have a better balance than the D model.  The single drop tank makes it easier to launch from a deck and still provides plenty of air time.   It also generates more perk points if you land a kill. :)

The P-38 carries 10 (10!) rockets, plus bombs, and packs a pretty good set of guns in the nose for strafing towns and gvs.  Its slow speed makes it susceptible to ground flak, and it can compress quickly if you're not careful, and the visibility out the sides is horrible, but for lifting ordinance its better than any of the other fighter/bombers I've flown.

I've tried flying the FM-2, but I'm just not cut out for slow speed furballing.  I use the FM-2 for ground attack when I fly it.

The 205 used to be a dominate plane. Pry still is but not as old versions, ask pongo and Thunder.

I just might pull it back out.

Which 190?  190A5, 190A8, 190F8, or 190D9  they all have "190" icon (probably why you see so many?), and are quite different incarnations of the same beast.

I would have to say the P-47D11 as well. And the KI-67 when I feel like a good  turn fight.

109-F4 for its climbing and turn ability - nothing underneath you is safe :)
