Within 6 months of the outbreak of hostilities with the US and Britan (and australia and new zealand) the japanese had overun indochina, northern new guiena, all of malasia and were poised to invade india.
For the record, Canada was there also. The last operational unit to fight the Japanese in Hong Kong, was the Royal Rifles and the Winnipeg Grenadiers.
"October 27 1,973 troops of The Royal Rifles of Canada and The Winnipeg Grenadiers depart Vancouver aboard the SS Awatea and HMCS Prince Robert for garrison duty in Hong Kong "
"December 25 Canadians launch one last assault before Hong Kong surrenders at 3:15 p.m. Battle for Hong Kong ends with 290 Canadians killed and 493 wounded, 260 survivors die during captivity"
If you are interest in what happened in between, some info can be found here.
http://worldatwar.net/nations/canda/timeline.htmlI suggest that you might want to look up what happened to the Canadians that surrendered.
http://www.valourandhorror.com/HK/HKsyn.htmI can only imagine what happened to the indegenous peoples.
However, "In 1995 the Japanese Prime Minister of the time, Tomiichi Murayama, offered a "heartfelt apology" for his country's aggression "
