Author Topic: AMD finally releases XP 2600+ (Read 660 times)

AMD launches the 2400+ and 2600+ today. The very interesting part is that they are proving to overclock very well. Tom's Hardware has one running at 2.8 GHz true clock speed!

For reference the XP 2200+ runs at 1800 MHz true, the 2600+ runs at 2.133 GHz true.

The 2600+ will probably not hold the performance crown long, as Intel launches the 2.8 GHz P4 next week. The fact that the Athlon is overclocking so well means that AMD will be able to continue to stay with Intel.

I mention this because those looking to build systems right now will want to wait about a week, as prices on current CPUs are going to fall by a significant amount.

They've only released demos (ala Intel with the 1GHz release). Its not supposed to be available to the masses until September some time. Anandtech showed it being pretty side by side with the 2.53 GHz P4.

The 2.8 GHz P4 is supposed to be released next Monday. I guess we'll have to wait and see if that's just a paper release too.

The platforms that support the XP 2400 and 2600+ are the nForce boards and VIA KT333 for sure. There's no word on support from other platforms.

Benchmarks indicate a virtual tie in performance overall between the XP 2600+ and 2.533 GHz P4. The 2.8 GHz P4 will probably be slightly faster overall. It's not like in the past where the rating system was very conservative. In the past an XP 1800+ easily beat the 2 GHz Willamette core P4.

DejaVu is right that it is sort of a paper release. I wouldn't expect to see large quantities of these 2 processors available until early to mid September. I think AMD just "released" them now to avoid appearing to be too far behind Intel when they release the 2.8 P4 next week. A supplier site I have access to indicates the 2.8 P4 will be available to order on September 6th. It also looks like the existing P4s are going to get serious price cuts. The 2.533 P4 will be priced within $60 of the 2600+ Athlon.

No, dont think I'm biased to any of the companies, that intel cpu rocks.

But its way overpriced. Of course if money was no object I'd get the new P4.

But if money wasnt the object I'd be flying a 3/4 P-51D replica and shooting pepper spray bottles with expensive firearms.

I do like the "overpriced" nomicker placed on the Pentium processors. Let's wait just a little bit and see how long AMD is willing to sell their processors at a loss.

Maybe someday they will raise prices and Intel will go cheaper in wich case I'll go intel, like the good old Celeron 366 @ 550mhz days.

Don't fret about your processor being cheaper Eagler. You buy it to play games, that's all. I have an 1800XP and quite happy with it tho it can be bought for peanuts now. What I do is skip a few generations before upgrading. Wait as long as you possibly can. I have a Geforce3 Ti500. Next time I upgrade it will be Geforce6 or 7! Lets face it, AH still runs ok on my old PIII600 Geforce2 GTS.
