202 vs. 205
« on: August 23, 2002, 03:54:07 AM »
I've a few questions about those planes:

Both planes have almost the same wings, fuselage, right or wrong?
The 205 is powered by a FIAT RA.1050 RC 58 and the 202 is powered by the Alfa Romeao RA 1000 RC 41, right or wrong?
AFAIK the 205 is a worse turner than the 202,  right or wrong? But why? Only cause the 205 is heavier (2581kg vs. 2350kg)?

Not entirely sure, just guessing here.

The world of aero-dynamics is very mysterious it seems. You clip a little teeney section off from a certain plane's wing, and it suddenly has better roll rate, enough for people to notice. A slight bump on the cowl suddenly reduces speed and efficiency in turns.. etc etc..

To think the La-5FN and the La-7 uses exact same engines and armament... such astounding differences between the 5FN and the 7 was from aero-dynamic clean-up in the designs. The plane turns a little worse, but becomes a speed-demon.

Maybe it was like this with the 202 and the 205 too.

Umm, wan't this due to DB 601 vs DB 605 ?

With more power out of 605, it should have even better turn rate, no ?

I think C202 can out-turn C205 at horizontal turn, but C205 can out-turn C202 at vertical turn. because C205 has more powers.

The 202 turns much better than the 205 .

Hi Duedel,

>AFAIK the 205 is a worse turner than the 202,  right or wrong? But why? Only cause the 205 is heavier (2581kg vs. 2350kg)?

Using these weights and 1475 resp. 1175 hp, I'd estimate that due to the higher weight, the MC205 would only have 95% of the MC202's sustained turn rate.

However, this turn only needs 15% more power while the MC205 has a plus of 26%, so it can actually be expected to turn faster than these 95% anyway :-)

The turn radius of the MC202 is still shorter, and it's superior in instantaneous turns as well. The sustained turn rate of the MC205 probably is quite close though.

(Nothing scientific, just a rough rule of thumb.)

Regards,

Henning (HoHun)

The 202 turns like a spit9, I don't think the 205 even turns as well as a ki61 .
