Dead on, the visuals in Charlie Mopic.

The first minutes of SPR had the best sound capture imo. Hollywood always enhances the sounds individually for effect of the local shot.
When the guy is firing the mg (in a movie) and the sound of the mg is the loudest thing you hear, or the mortar, or the plane flying over etc.
Best as I remember in combat, it is just the "amount" of sound all mixed up together just overwhelming the senses. At times so loud a person could not even "hear" his own rifle firing.

Saving Private Ryan....incredible.
Platoon had some 'good' firefights.

It would be interesting to get responses from those that actually were in combat as to what was realistic.
How about also best air combat movie?

Full Metal Jacket.

The 'Sniper Scene' from the burned city was for it's time pretty awesome, if not completely horrible in it's reality.
Always made me cringe anyways.

The shots blowing off the cement from the building from the M60, and certainly the sniper hitting the guys trapped in the open. Arrrg.. riveting.

Either Heat or Proof of Life.

Heat's gunfight scene was co-ordinated by none other than Andy McNabb of "Bravo two zero" fame, formerly Brit SAS.

Proof of Life's rescue at the end is one of my favorites, although they hollywooded parts of it up (knifing sentry down with a gerber multi tool (WTF!?!?), etc.). The M249 SAW gunner point of view was really well done in my opinion.

Also, one of my favorite scenes, not movies, is in the forgettable Clear and Present Danger, when they had a gun-camera attached to Chavez's Mp5...I found this to be a very cool shot to use in a gunfight, with the recoil bouncing the picture, and giving the audience an idea of what the sight picture in a knock em down, drag em out gunfight would look like when everything is going crazy.

As for Midnight Target's answer, that put a smile on my face for a couple hours or so. I just can't stop laughing during parts of that movie.

The scene where the squad is walking through the jungle..

"Charlie was close, soooo close we could almost see him."

"Where's 8-ball?"

They turn back and see 8-balls face through the foliage.

"8-ball! We thought the gook's got you!"

Then the picture moves and shows 8-balls head stuck on a pole and gooks rushing in capturing the rest of the squad.

Absolute film classic.

There was this british movie about the SAS called "Final Hour" or something. That was a great movie also but wasnt normal war flick, more a terrorist flick. Was probably made in late 70s or early 80s.

A really sad scene from Platoon was when the helicopter took off with Charlie Sheen and gang all inside and William Dafoe was still on the ground getting shot up. Charlie looked up at Barnes and knew that Barnes had somehow killed Dafoe. Platoon didnt have the best combat scenes but it was still entertaining.

Maybe (and just maybe), SPR before anyone got to the beach and any characters were introduced. After that, it was pure John Wayne. People died when they were supposed to and avoided being hit when they were supposed to. (Despite the germans being dead accurate one second, they couldnt hit a barn the next).

For the best firefights (not necesarrily realistic), watch ' The Killer' and 'Hard Boiled':D
