XP Pro here, much more stable, better control of apps, good compatibility. Turn off bubble-gum look, MS remote help and auto update crap and you'll love it.

I'd never go back to a 9x OS.

if it aint broken then dont fix it unless your willing to go all the way . win 98 is still the better gaming platform . in my opinion.

But XP pro seams to be working pretty good, except for the fact that everything isnt updated to work on it yet , and its a ram hog it uses 128mb vs 32 mb .

also if your going to XP  you have to compleatly scrub your old OS off your Hard drive (I mean Fdisk and reformat ) DO NOT INSTALL ON TOP OF AN OLD OS !!!

As for the duel boot set up it works fine for me on a dual hard drive system and you have to enable the OS that you want to run in the bios/dos setup screen as you turn on the pc for it to work trouble free. (But note here two hard drives each one with 1 OS and correct drivers installed ) Some people say a partitioned single hd will work, but i havent tried it with 98 and xp yet .

now My inlaw and I tried a duel boot on a Raid system (Iwill 333 mb, 2.0 AMD xp cpu,  1.5 gig ddr) 2 matched hard drives running the raid w/ win xp on them and then a 3rd drive with win 98se on it .and the results are as such..  the first 3 times we switched it back and forth between the systems it worked fine ...
the 4th time we switched down to 98se then back up to xp .. the whole mess crashed (and I mean crashed badly) had to fdisk the whole mess and start over .it would not even repair itself with the system disc. and or reload either OS (we havent tried the dual boot system again yet because it just wont work on this combo )

A note on the Raid systems (dual hard drive striping simutanalisly)
They just SCREAM !!  it loads 2+x's faster then a single hd system.

well thats all i know ...and current results from the "Roo" PC labratory ...

I have a single harddrive partitioned with Me and XP pro, I have no problems at all, very stable.

Only problem I had was some compatibility probs with older games (hence why I have duel boot) and also that stupid refreash rate problem in XP (solved with Nvidia refreash rate fix)

I am very happy with XP plus was very easy to setup the network we have in our house (4 PC's)

*I believe it was bloom25 that was saying that microsoft had plans for an ambitious licencing plan for win XP. I dont remember the details though. Something like "XP owners will have to purchase (and repurchase) a licence every few years". I dont want to misqoute.

Win2K user here.  love it!  Agree, I will never use  a win 9X OS ever again.

Win 2k / 98

I agree with most of the replies.  I am currently running 98 SE and don't have a reason to upgrade because "if it ain't broke..."

When I do upgrade it won't be to XP however.  I have a Saitek X45 and I don't think there are XP drivers for it.  I'll upgrade to 2000 because it's basically XP without all the problems.  Some good friends of mine who are big gamers have tried both on several of their systems and they are all running 2000 now.   Hearing these guys squeak about XP at lunch is enough of a flag for me to stay away from XP.

XP personally i wouldnt install it if you paid me.

some people get along just fine with it, BUT depending on your setup it can give you some really nasty Hardware compaterbility problems.

XP is microft trying to relaunch their NT technolagy to the masses and one thing i really hate about XP is it just loves to keep seattle in touch with your computer, sly spyware?

Its not going to do any damage, but keep with what you got if everything works fine, you wont get a performance boost from useing it and it could have some issues with some of your hardware.

as said, if its not broken done fix it.

but the last (2.8.0.1) work so far :)

You cannot program the rotary but all the buton can be mapped now :p

I'm a gamer, I have XP. I have Quake, UT, AH, OFP, MOHAA, RTCW and various other games that come and go from my HDD. My laptop has XP, my mates all run XP. We all love XP. If you mates are having problems, well, do the math... it ain't hard :)

I'm still trying to figure out "the problems" with XP?  This has worked FLAWLESSLY since installation.    I hate rumor mills.

98SE sucks at work for me, BOXBOY28 works with me and he can attest to it.

The only time I ever hear of XP having problems when the user(s) have the following installed all at the same time and believe me it happens all the time "I know is sounds unbelivable".

AGP and PCI graphics cards
2 NCIC cards
SB & Turtle sound cards
ATA 133 & 66 cards
3 different Cd-roms
250 watts

In the end if you can absorb the cost give it a try decide for yourself "your preception is your reality".

fyi 2000 and XP are almost identical except for the bells and whistles.

both are much more stable than Win9x.
Drivers might be a problem though.
