One day a senior gas service meter reader took one of his new trainees out to inspect a neighborhood's gas meters.
They had parked the truck at the and of the street and made teir way down the block, stopping at each house to read the meter.
When they reached the last house on the block they were greeted with a friendly smile by the woman who owned the house. She showed them where the meter was and the two men did their work.
Their work completed and the day of work over, the older gas company employee challenged the younger one to a foot race back to the truck to prove that an older man could still out-run a younger man.
The young man agreed and they both took off running as fast as they could towards the truck.
They both arrived at the same time, but much to their suprise they found the woman just barely behind them. As they were very confused, the two men inquired of the woman:
"why were you running after us?"
she said "well when i saw two gas company men running as fast they could away from my house, i figured i should try to keep up!"
