I think we should ditch (Bad pun) :p runways altogether. I agree ending up on the runway isn't difficult even with a dead engine and bits missing but we have all seen enough video footage of Spits, 109's etc taking off 4,5,6 abreast to know that for fighters at least runways did not really exist in a lot of cases at least to any specific degree. Even landings were only made generally "Into wind" (OK I know they did in the PTO as most fields were dug out of heavily wooded areas etc.

You can land anywhere on a V field without penalty (In aircraft as well). I think the perks should be based on the state of the airframe more than if you bring your craft to a halt on or off the runway.

For your informations fighters have NEVER (not even in WWI) been able to take off on grass.  Any photos or films indication otherwise are pure propaganda and falsified, just like the moon missions.  I base this on a simple observation.

Landing a HOT LA5, with no gas and a lot of holes spintering the frame.  Gronk the gear down, bleed smash, every trick there is since I won't get a good second chance.  Touch down, slam on the brakes, end up stopping five feet past the end of the runway.

Trottle up _gently_, apply right rudder and brake to turn around and get back on the runway with the vapors left in the tank, and the undercarriage collapses on the rough terrain.

If an LA5 can't taxi five feet off the end of a runway, nothing has ever taken off on anything but a smooth, FOD screened field.  QED.

don't worry puck , lots of un-skilled pilots can't taxi across the grass without breaking something, but with some training you can learn.  first, you have to fly a man's plane not that sissy lala5 (always wondered who flew them )

Personally, I think there are enough obstacles on the airfield to deter people from landing anywhere unless you had to.  So I think a successful landing for be appropriate if you made it to the field.   On the flip side the perk system for landing is fine.  If you land a damaged plane few feet from the field you get a ditch, which is, more points than you would get had the pilot bailed or crashed.  The thing is you're going to try to bring that plane home to put it on the runway to land those kills, see your name and get the full perks.  Perhaps it’s a case of being 2 ft from the runway and you see the host tell you that you've ditched is the problem.  That message should be changed to "Oooh you were so close!" instead of ditched.

If you're plane is damaged, chances are you won't make to the runway so you get penalized not because you missed the runway but because you brought a damaged plane home.  Good pilots or not to badly damaged aircraft will make it to the runway and be rewarded with full perks for the effort.

P.S. john, I fly the La5, killed a few more than have killed me in it!  It's a type of plane that prevents a lot of P51's La7s and Typhoons from escaping unscathed!
