A few months back I was in the TA and had someone say they had the same problem.  I ended up in level flight and they had a very hard time hitting me.  Watching the aircraft behind me they were oscillating back and forth trying to get a bead on me even though I was on auto-pilot.  Turns out it was a stick scaling problem.

The scaling was far enough off with the dead band that minor compensations caused large directional changes.  Try getting someone to help with your stick setup in the TA.  I think some hanging around the boards here may have settings they can give you.

Anyone…?

Yes Zip...that is the first way to improve your aiming. 1st get someone to help you with your stick and heres the next step. I used to fly the F4U-1C until I switched to the Hellcat, the 50's fly much straighter than the 20mm. Every night before I went to bed I used to use all my ammo out in the Hellcat all 2400 50's offline and killed the drones. I did this for as long as I could until I got the MA back. I used to shoot 600 and farther with the C hawg, now I RARELY shoot out of the 450 range. Most of my shots occur from 300 and in. All my planes convergences are 400 on every fighter. Excecpt 262 and bombers. Now with the 190 its even harder. When I fly the 190 I don't shoot unless I am withing 300, and sometimes I will get lucky with 400 out. Patience and timing is the key. Patience = getting within range and Timing is all about when to shoot. Me and my dad used to get about a 6% hit percentage when we flew the C hawg exclusively. Now with the Hellcat, the 6 months I did fly, my hit % did not go under 12.97%. My highest month was 20.97, which I didn't miss anything. So just remember patience and timing is the key. And for 1 ammo load in a 190 just go offline and kill the drones, your hit % will go up big time. You will even shoot better if you just kill the drones with your ammo 1 time. You will see the increse in hits if you fly the MA that night. I hope this helps!

Also check your convergence.

If its set for farther than 300, you have it set out too far and it will actually make close in shooting more difficult.  A few experten may use long distance settings, but when learning set it in the 250 range.

And then never fire until your under 500, preferabley 300.

I'm no fighter expert, but I do not use Zoom within 800 yards. I only use zoom if I cannot see which way the enemy is turning.

Also, adjust your front view, unzoomed, so that your gunsight (I assume your using the standard sight) is just barely below the top of your HUD. The center dot should be on the verge of going off the top of your display. This will help you see better over the nose of your AC.

My $.02 -- Go offline, set your ammo to the max in arena settings, take off and just keep shooting down the drones until boredome sets in. I know they are not very exciting targets, but you get used to bullet drop and get to see just how high you need to aim with each type of weapon to get hits, as well as the extra lead needed in a banked turn, etc. You'll eventually be able to hit planes that are too far under your nose to see when you pull the trigger (in fact, in most turing "deflection" situations this is required, particularly with Russian or German guns).

Also, work on getting kills at 300, then work your way into longer shots (again, with Russian or German planes this might be you maximum for reasonable results, just like 400 - 500 for allied aircraft). You can still get hits at longer ranges, just not too many kills.

As a new pilot, your aim most likely sucks, a lot.  There is no real "trick" to it, just practice.  Keep shooting at stuff untill you start landing hits.  It's frustrating at first, but your aim will "click".

The best planes to learn to shoot in are the US .50 aircraft, the .50 has a high rate of fire, and nice flat trajectory, plus lots of ammo.

I do not use ZOOM when I shoot.  I did at one time, and when I stopped using it my gunnery improved a LOT.

This will sound nuts - it did to me when someone suggested I try it - but try flying with tracers off for a while.
