Can't get AH to run
« on: September 29, 2002, 06:01:25 PM »
With all the debate about AH vs WBIII here and on AGW, I downloaded AH to see what all the flap is about but I can't get it to run. The opening screen looks fine but when I select and go offline, I get the message box "invalid model number" and everything flickers and breaks up. It seems that the game and sound is running fine but, the graphics do not work. I tried deleting video7.cfg, many different combinations of desktop resolution, game resolution, etc., but no luck. I can run Warbirds III with no problems and all other applications on my computer run fine. I have done no tweaking, have no strange programs or utilities running. Virus software was disabled before installation. I asked for help twice from AH tech support and got quick replies but they could not fix it. Has anyone here seen this, and if so, how did you fix it? Image of goofy graphics is attached. System info is below. I hope someone out there can help out.

try turning off FSAA.  I noticed I had a problem with it enabled.  If you have it...  I have noticed that AH can be picky sometimes.

Thanks for the reply dingbat - I have tried anti-aliasing off. Generally, I have it set to being controlled by the application under the Direct 3D options.

Did you try checking Disable Paletized Textures?  I see you already tried earlier drivers.  Some have reported similar problems with the 40.xx drivers.  I went back to 30.82.

Davenrino, I had the same problem with 20.xx and 30.xx drivers. Tried "Disable Paletized Textures" but no joy. I think there must be something deep in the registry somewhere. A lot of heads better than mine have tried to figure out this out without success. Also, my 3DMark2001 SE score is only about 5300 whereas similar machines in their database run about 8000+ or so; this is a clue that something is fishy. Fortunately, everything else on my runs quite well enough except AH which is frustrating as I want to see what it is all about. One of these days I'll do a clean install and try again. Thanks for trying to help!

Might be a bad display card, PNY is not exactly known for their high quality. Try another card in your box and see what happens.

Thanks for the input, Hussein. I had thought of that, but don't have another Ti500 handy. I've been thinking about ugrading my card so as everything is running fine for now, if not quite as fast as it should (except AH!), I might just be patient for awhile.

YOYO,

Have you tried lowering your framerates in  vid setup in AH?

Matter of fact try different settings there.

Win2k is the culprit and have seen guys here w/same probs, just cant remember how they fixed it.

Here's a link to guys havn same prob w/w2k

A crisp to Blackfalcon4! I checked the link that he posted to other guys with the same problem and it is the Service Pack version for W2K which is at fault. I updated to SP3 and AH seems to run fine now. My stick is OK, but I have some issues with CH throttle and pedal setup (AH recognizes them, but does not implement them) but if I read the setup instructions I'm sure that I can sort it out. Many thanks to all who tried to help out. By the way, I tried AH on my computer at work (W2K SP1, Geforce2 GTS/PRO) and it runs fine; must W2K SP2 or perhaps in combination with Geforce3 Ti500 that is not compatible.
