Wish AH like most of the games were not forced through contractual agreements with MS to port for MS OS's only. They get financial & and other incentives for signing on the dotted line. This is how M$ has been able to maintan a monopoly. Would be nice to be able to run AH on a Linux box. Yes I know utilizing wine with Linux you can run AH, but its not perfected enough in my opinion.
A lot of the win2k/xp vs 98 depends on your hardware. Older systems will most likely benefit from being run on win98. But anything with a gf3/4, on a mb/cpu made in the past year, you're probably better off with 2k/xp. Unless you like a program crashing and bringing down the whole machine.
I don't think microsoft gives any incentive to develop for windows, other than windows itself.(DirectX, etc)
The people microsoft screws into keeping thier monopoly going are the manufacturers. Most of them buy OEM versions of windows, at a discounted price, to get this price they have to agree to various contracts. There are some pretty nasty restrictions in them, not all of which are known(The contracts are covered by an NDA) But it stops them from selling dual boot machines, and restricts them from sellling machines without an operating system.
Sad part is, even after being found guilty of anti-trust violations, nothing has changed, except that microsoft realized how much they can get away with.
