Xbox is a much better system - the trick is that it doesn't have the number of games that the PS2 has.  Luckily, that'll be changing in the next several months.

Also, I think the general consensus is that if you are mainly interested in sports and racing, the Xbox wins hands down.

It has much better legs than the PS2, which is older, slower technology.  You get better graphics (aside from resolution, the Xbox has better graphics than my PC w/ a GF3), as all of the bells and whistles are turned on.  You get a hard drive, so you won't be buying memory cards, etc.  With the new deal, you can get the DVD stuff for free, and they are bundling a couple of games with it for the holiday season.

And if that doesn't convince you, this should:

Thats a tough call, I have a PS2 and love it. Thinking about getting a Xbox, but not to sure.  I've heard that they are struggling to sell them.  If "Bill" can't make to much money with it, well "Bye Bye".

Sony is solid in the market. Forget the Dreamcast, Sega does not make them any more.

Xbox hands down. I had been out of the console market till last year and bought a PS2 with NCAA Football 2002; it was nice but I felt it lacked something. I played the same game this past summer on my friends Xbox and then played NCAA Football 2003 on the Xbox and PS2. It was like night and day to me. That was the moment I made a deal to another friend to sell him my PS2 and the 3 games I had and then bought myself an Xbox and NCAA 2003. The Xbox has better graphics and it does not take all month to get the game started if you only have a limited amount of time to play.

It's all a matter of scale...

PS2 plays all of the PS1 games, and it even uses PS1 controllers.

I expect that the PS3 will stay consistent with this and use the same controllers as well.

My kids have had both here in the house. Difference in graphics is marginal at best.

If it were me, I'd go with the PS2.

Thanks kindly for all the input. So I gather the regular XBOX does not play DVDs? You have to buy a separate something to do that? Is it expensive? This is theo nly way I am justifying this with the wife - gotta have DVD player ;) I told her what great kids we could be and give our DVD player to her sister for Christmas ;) Kratzer, where can I get that stuff for free?

I am leaning towards the Xbox, especially with the broadband capabilites.

Why get an X-Box? It's just a windows-PC put into a small box at a good price. You'll get all the X-Box games worth as PC port at equal if not better quality (resolution, online, mouse control in FPS). The X-Box does not have one KILLER game you cant get on a PC (IMO).

The PS2 on the other hand features a lot of games, especially out of the roleplaying genre you'll never get on a PC.

To play DvDs on a XBox, you need to get a remote control that is around $20 - $30.  I think they also sell the DvD remote with the system in a bundle now, not sure.

Kirin, that's totally not the case - everyone thinks because it has a hard drive and windows CD lurking in the background that it is a computer.   Not the case at all.

There are plenty of good games, and plenty more on the way.

As far as I know, most anyplace should have the free DVD deal - I believe it is a mail in rebate type of thing, and until you get the rebate, you will be out $30.

Oh, and that bundle is Jet Set Radio Future (I haven't played it - seems more of a younger crowd game) and Sega GT, which it seems has been pretty well received.

My favorite, and the one that really shows off the graphics, has been Rallisport Challenge, though both Halo and Max Payne were fun to play on it as well.

X-Box is just a P3-750 with a GF3ish level card and 64Mb of RAM.

The only reason the graphics may look better than a GF3 based PC is when you drop the res down to TV level (640x480ish) fps goes up and you can use all of the funky hardware effects without massive framerate hits.

Microsoft are playing tech-Cops on the X-box (scanning your system for stuff they don't like), give ya $$$ to Sony.

If you want to stick to real games (especially online stuff) then a PC is still best.
