Are you a Simmer or a Gamer?
« on: October 15, 2002, 01:30:37 PM »
Something that came to mind from another thread.

We have 2 communities in AH. You've got your gamers and your simmers.

I'm curious to know which side of the fence you fall on. (Some guys need not answer...We already know)

Here's my deifinitions. Some may apply to you. Some may not. But chances are you fall, generally into one the 2 categories.

Simmer: (AKA Stratweeny, Scorepotato, BuffDweeb, Little general)

Interested in the subtle nuances of the game. Would not mind if you had to go through a preflight start up sequence and taxi out to a runway to fly. Would like ATC and Flight Patterns Etc. You prefer organized missions with stated objectives, and value leaders who command the missions with great skill. You consider strategic targets when entering a mission, and have no qualms about flying extended periods of time to reach an objective. You like your flight model as accurate, and complicated as possible, and you don't mind reading a textbook just to learn how to raise your landing gear.

Gamer: (AKA Quaker, Mindless Furballer, Suicide Dweed)
You want your action fast and furious. If given the chance, you would take an Airstart at 10K everytime. No need for landing gear here, you will fly until you die, or Auger when there's nothing left to shoot. You want dogfights no more than 5 mins. away, and an unlimited ammo feature would suit you just fine. Flight model is still important, but if it's not 100% dead on, you can live with it. Resets, base captures and Bombing are words not in your vocabulary. You only need one button on your stick, and that's to fire your guns.

Now, I know these are extreme cases, but which category would you place yourself?

Simmer most defintely.

I like working with the realities as they exist in AH and striving to be successfull whether it's killing an enemy, destroying a refinery or capturing a base.

And, yes, score does matter to me.  I use it not necessarily to compare myself to other people but as a tool to gauge my improvement.

Gaming IMO is for 13 year olds and people with A.D.D.  ;)

I apparently fall in the middle. Definetly not a simmer and your definition of gamer doesn't fit me either.

Like I said, my definition are extreme cases. I just did that for demonstration purposes.

If you fall in the middle, please define yourself.

Me for example. If I have time, I am definitly a simmer. On squad nights, and any night my wife works, I'm a simmer.

If I need a quick fix, and my time is limited, I still want all the realism possible, but I'm just looking for a quick fight.

If I had to choose one style of play forever, I would no doubt be a simmer.

I was having a hard time classifying myself, and feel you may be making some assumptions that are too generalized. I would classify it as such:

Flight Models

Simulation supporter - Someone who wants high fidelity in the flight models from a mid-ground perspective to full fidelity of every system.

Arcade Player- Someone who wants an easier model from the middle ground down to the arcade level.

Game Models

Real Time Strategy player - Someone who wants an organized capture the map war, but not necessarily one that reflects a WW2 reality.

Scenario player - Someone who wants realistic missions that don't necessarily involve upping a goon to grab A13, unless you're recreating Operation Market Garden, etc.

Furballer- Quick action, quick fights, no real worry about death.

Role Playing Gamer - Someone who likes to be ranked, get medals, improve score and standing, etc. (works best with either the RTS or Scenario approach).

I would classify myself as a simulation-leaning gamer who likes both scenarios and furballing. I like RPGs in single player games, but would likely play in the mission arena for the scenario opportunities while furballing in the MA when the mood strikes.

I guess I have been all these things depending upon how much beer I have had.

We have a myriad of personalities here. To categorize is futile.

Charon's defs. are good, but I can take some of several and put myself there.

I'm a furballer. I like quick action but air starts would be stupid. I like the fight but hate getting shot down. I attempt to land every sortie. I like to fly as I think the real guys did, ala role playing, but score and medals do not interest me. I do watch my stats, but that is pure competition with myself.

I get to fly 20 to 30 hours a month. The war doesn't interest me in the least, however, I am just as competitve as the rest. I don't like to lose. I just keep it on a smaller scale, what with my limited mental capacity and all. :)

About sums it up for me. I do find it funny that folks who spend all their time in the main would consider themselves simmers. The main simulates very little but it can be very fun.
