They continually try to hint at military sniper training.

Dunno why people think its bad. Eventually they are going to come to the realization that anyone with a hunting rifle and scope could have made the same shots... and watch the legislation roll.

I guess my problem is that I just don't like being led or fed what to think and the news is becoming so bad in that respect.

It's so much harder for them to actually go out and get stories
instead of picking one story and surrounding it with fluff for a week so they won't have to actually do any other reporting.

it's discouraging.

even on the internet I go to 5 different news sources and they are all carrying the exact same stories. What is the point?

If they are going to be entertaining then at least have the sense to not release 5 movies about santa during christmas time..

If they are going to be informative and give the news straight then they need to quit with the speculation, implications and opinions and just spit out the story.

As far as this spawning further gun legislation, what hasn't?

I think they are trying to make it out to be very difficult so every yahoo with a .22 and above doesn't start replacing their beercans with gas pumpin ppl...

It may not bode well for them to state the fact the nutbag would have had to been a legally blind retard to miss his targets with the setup he had...

For what it's worth, 3 of 3 U.S. media transcripts that I have seen on the topic all specifically explain that (paraphrased by me) 'earning 'expert rifle' qualifications is not in the same league as being a sniper or a special forces soldier in terms of shooting ability and/or training'.

Maybe it's one case where the movie image isn't all bad. Most people who have seen a military sniper in a movie probably understand that the big deal (with regards to military snipers and shooting ability) is the ability to hit a small target, at great range, in difficult conditions, with great consistency.

That's good, I'm glad someone is attempting to at least be clear and honest.

some average wierdo killing people with a rifle imo is different than some highly trained special operative killer that somehow became loose and started attacking people..

I think the fact that he was hiding out in the trunk of a car and murdering people at random in a major city is enough to get people's attention without having to imply stuff that just isn't there.

In the mundane US army, expert marksman rating is easily attainable. Its akin to being able to hit a 5' target at 600 yrds with open sites. No big deal xept most city kids goin in the army usually only have gang bang training with 9mms at 10 feet so qualifying marksman is a big deal when it isnt really if you know anything about shooting at all.

There is no sniper school at fort lewis. Typical brit press.

All this sniper talks got me wanting to go hunting in Montana, wish I'd bought an out-of-state license last year for this season, just picked up a remington 7mm with a Leopold scope.

Qualifying expert with an m16 is not that big of a deal. A person I work with who is in reserves shoots at the expert level every time they have to requalify. The 5.56 round has an unbelievably flat trajectory. Point and shoot is basically what they said.

Every year just before deer season, I take my '06 out and cap off 30-40 rounds at 300 yards. I put 75% of them into an area a little bigger than a pie plate and shooting a '180 grain '06 round is like lobbing a softball compared to the 5.56 (.223). Granted, its with a scope, but the point being the news is making this guy sound like he is the greatest shot in the world cuz he qualified as "EXPERT" Big deal.

He is no where near SNIPER quality shooting at target 1500 meters and more away.

Did they ever conclude how far away he was when the shots were taken? I was heaing he was less than 200 meters. Unless he is shooting 300 meters or more, any lunatic with a rifle and a scope could make those shots.

I say give 'em to the families and let them take a few shots at him.
