More Hellcats were lost to operation accidents than F4U's in the same number of combat sorties as well.

Myth and reality only seem to affect the F4U for the negative.

Eh?  No! 5% of all 109's lost were lost during TO/landing.

I am pretty sure he doesn't mean actual ground operations. I think he means colliding with the ground due to a rollover stall or something to that affect.

I'd really like to see the numbers for this.  ie # sorties and # TO/Landing crashes for both F4U and F6F. Preferably numbers up to and not exceeding the end of the war.  I wouldn't want F4U sorties in Korea affectign the numbers.

Probably because the Tempest has better guns and better high altitude performance.
