That sure is an exciting film of you demonstrating how to poorly fly a higher, faster Tempest against lower, slower Spits who were completely at your mercy.  It's a good thing you decided to run when you did.

Considering the Tempest turned out to be a poor interceptor in real life due to its poor climb rate and high altitude performance, it's not surprising that a Spitfire Mk IX would out climb you above 15,000ft.  The Tempest was best at intercepting V-1 rockets and ground attack missions.

Maybe if you had shown aggressiveness in engaging the Spits they wouldn't have had the opportunity to grab alt while you dilly-dallied above them with a 200mph speed advantage.

The entire film shows you diving, not turning, zooming some, and then making one half-hearted pass on a Spit that results in you blowing a really easy shot.  You then high-tail it away once half of the guys who started below you have had a chance to grab to the same altitude (albeit still slower than you).

Not exactly post worthy, but whatever floats your boat I guess.

No, the guy is showing a film with a comment chiding the Spits for thinking he would turn with them.  What I saw instead was a perch-sitter with alt and speed blowing his every advantage quickly and then bugging out.  And then later even complaining because his higher, faster perked plane didn't climb well enough.

LOL!

My real question is why he even bothered posting this film other than to embarrass himself.

LOL

Brings back some of my Niki dweeb era memories.

The old FM Niki was one of the best high altitude fighters. It ate P51s alive at 28-35K. All they could do was (and just barely) run away in straight line - anything else like climbing, diving or turning was suicide, and all the while the fanboys were screaming there was nothing wrong with it's FM!  :)

Maybe it was to show us how not to fly a Tempest.
You're right, he held all the cards and still ended up folding.  If he had used his advantage of altitude and speed, plus the added advantage of being in a plane with better lower altitude performance, then he would have returned home with a few more scalps than he did.

I can confirm that!  Seems like every time I wade into Bishop airspace, I get shot down by either Spitfire IXs on patrol, LA-7s on intercept, or Typhoons on a jabo run.  Well, except for this weekend when Blndie shot me down twice in his 109F; first when I was in a heavy P-38 below him got shot in the face, and then again when I was in a fuel-laden 109G6 above him (and I augured in my dive). Doh! :p
