Not sure what you mean by "inverted", but that's a contra-rotating propellor. The props are geared to turn in opposite directions to remove prop torque (the engine crankshaft still causes a mild torque reaction) to make it easier to control the aircraft about it's axis of rotation.

The two three-bladed props also provided more thrust than the standard 4 or 5 blade propellor that later marks of Spitfire were fitted with.

The installation was somewhat complicated however.

I think in this instance this Spitfire PRXIX has been fitted with a Rolls Royce Griffon from an Avro Shackleton.

S!

If I remember right, early contra rotating props had serious vibration problems

I saw that plane the first time I went to chino. They had just set it up in the restoration shop.  It didnt have any wings or panels on it. I followed the restoration over the next aprox 6 years each time I went to chino it had a little more done to it. Finally I saw it fly at the airshow along with funked pei animal mathman and a couple others I dont recall. It was a very nice show. Funked took a bunch of pics THAT HE HAS NEVER POSTED!! Hint hint. If you ever get the chance to go to chino take it.  They have prolly the best display I have ever seen of a betty bomber that was shot down its set up like it was found in the jungle complete with bullet holes.

It's good to see that they finally finished the rebuild; the last time I was there, it was just the beige primer coat with a number of panels still in bare metal where they were doing fitting work.
