Hey Hangtime you gonna glass that new bird your workin on or do you plan on monokoting it?  Who's kit is the one flying? and who's kit is the future bird?  I got out of the hobby this year.  And never progressed to the glassin stage.  But man does it make for some amazing detail.  If you dont wanna do that and you want to make the P-51 silver there is a really neat product out.  Its called FlightSilver, or flight medal. I think.  Goes on like a sticker pretty much, well you just have to see it.

When I was younger I would build all the ship models I could find in the stores along with varying sizes of armored vehicles. I eventually ended up using the ships and armor for explosives practice after the 4th of July every year.

I recreated and created massive naval battles in a large creek near my house quite often. I still get a kick out of remembering how I finally figured out how to make firecrackers go off in a chain. The end result was utterly ripping a model of the USS Ticonderoga (modern day version) apart with some well placed fireworks. Before I lit the fuse on it I had a friend shoot about 30 bottle rockets at it to simulate a missle attack on a CV battle group. The Tico was part of the screen of 6 missle frigates and destroyers I had built to guard the USS Enterprise. Needless to say the Russkis won the battle with their long range Badger launched ship killers.

But now I build the models to put in my son's room in a display case. Right now he and I have put an Fw-190A 8 in that case. It was one he picked out at Wal-Mart that was prepainted and was relatively easy to get me back in the model building habit with and to introduce him to it.

LOL reshke!

Yup.. all my Revell kits died spectacular deaths by the time i was 13. One day I'll tell yah about the demise of my Texaco Tanker. That one got me in the local paper. Hehehhehe..

Pfunk.. the biggest advantage to glassing is the durability of the finish and resistance to hanger rash. Bad side is it's heavy, and as a result A/C performance is cut, and even worse; the added weight of the structure generally overuns the engineering of the airframe.. stress related failures from sheer loads imparted on a hard landing that a ora-covered bird would rebound from often spell terminal failure for a glassed bird.

A lot of giants nowdays are engineered to handle the weight.. Ziroli kits are a good example of giants built to take the loads.. but they also require a minimum of 800 bucks worth of power plant to tote 'em around... and another 500 to 600 for retracts to try and keep it outta the dirt.  a lotta dough just for the parts that are gonna be the first to the scene of the crash.

I still favor the monocote or oracover route.. sure, the glass covered birds look might fine with all those rivets and panel lines... but I build to fly. ;)

I'm pretty impressed with the top-flite giant kits.. excellent examples of light BIG birds that are spectacular performers with a mite more affordable power and retracts. And, you can bronze-wool the covering to kill the gloss, and trick up the covering job with Krylon. Repairs are simple and straightforward.. gawd knows THATS a handy feature. ;)

I've helped several guys glass their birds, and I saw one flight metal job. Looked real good in photos, sucked up close with the human eye. And that flight-metal stuff REALLY puts weight on because yah gotta apply it to a smooth GLASSED surface. It's just shiny super sticky duct tape.. a 3M product. Poor guy got 2 rolls of duct-tape and a one page typed instruction sheet.. for ninety freakin dollars. Then, he had to paint trim on over that.. wallah. another un-flight worthy overweight hanger queen that blistered all over it's topside when it was out in the summer sun for a coupla hours.. poor guy.. I can still hear his high-picthed shriek when he realized what was happening... "My god... my Jugs MELTING!!... melting... melting.... oh, whotta world..."

I have 4 kits I am currently working on (relatively speaking:)). I have a revell 1/32 Hurri IIC, a Tamiya Jm23 in 1/48, a tamiya F4U-1a in 1/48, and a Hase P-47D in 1/48. I will likely finish one of them in in the next year with school/work/family and models going on at the same time. For Christmas, I kno I am getting a new airbrush and compressor (badger is what I am expecting

I've seen that kit, along with its P-51 prepainted counterpart.  I almost picked it up, but I already have plenty of P51 kits in boxes waiting for my attention.

The prepainted AMT/Ertl car kits are a lot of fun.  I've done their Woody surfmobile, Chevrolet SS, and am working on their Dodge Viper convertible.  Sometimes, the parts are a bit warped (particularly with the Woody), but I was able to correct it well enough. I've got the prepainted Dodge Challenger (in lime green), Hurst Olds 442 (in white), '39 Wagon Rod (in red) and the Baldwin Motion Camaro (in red) in the line-up, waiting for some rainy day modeling.  I think Wal-Mart only charged something like $10 for each kit and they lend themselves to experimentation pretty well too.  I'm going to try and detail the Viper's engine compartment.  The kits themselves are painted well enough but can come up short on engine details, so I may try to grab a different Viper kit to cannibalize the engine pieces.

Monogram 1/48 F-86F $10

Monogram 1/48 F-4J $15

Monogram 1/48 B-17G $20

Tamiya 1/48 P-51D $35

A ceiling covered with aircraft that excite me no matter how long I stare at them: Priceless

Thanks for the compliments. I wish I had the webspace to post better photos (though I would have to dust all of them first--yuck!).

I still have a 1/48 B-1 Bomber waiting to be painted. It is huge. I will have to rearrange everything to squeeze it in the modern group. I have so many left to build, but recently I bought a couple more :D Someday I will stop being lazy and finish the ones I have. Once I get in the mood, I can crank them out pretty fast. But for the past couple of years, I just haven't felt like painting. I spend most of my time playing flight sims and Operation Flashpoint instead :)
