Network Upgrade
« on: November 26, 2002, 02:05:36 PM »
I have been involved in helping IT with our network upgrade and have a new found appreciation for what you techie guys do for a living.

We started at Friday 4.00pm...finnished today, five minutes ago.  There is still one major issue with one software package...but I'm done with what I had to do.  (I also had to do my regular work yesterday and today so it has been a busy week so far.)  Our IT manager will be here until at least 1.00am AGAIN.

So... to you network guys.  I'll stick with managing companies and accounting work thanks.

Must have been a whopping big network Curval.

I remember physically relocating my ISP to another location.  Was down for 2.5 hours.

Ah. done that twice...you haven't lived until you think you have everything at the new location and discover you forgot one stinking server power cord at the old location   :)

Curval,

what did you get the chance to do? How large a network?

It isn't that big...maybe 35 users.  Servers were upgraded from NT to 2000 but every machine had to be upgraded to XP and all applications we use loaded on properly.  Some were easy...IT wrote scripts that activated on start-up etc...BUT don't forget..accountants fear change, and we had certain users who wouldn't let go of old DOS accounting packages!!!

Add to that the fact that throughout the past three years we have "tried" to get everything standarised in terms of having all the same computers...but we failed miserably.  We had IBM laptops, toshiba laptops, Dell laptops & desktops, as well as a few home-made band-aid machines built by the guy here in emergencies.  The driver issues alone was a jigsaw puzzle.

The worst problem we ran into was our time & billing system.  Three months ago we sent our database to the manufacturer to get fixed up for the upgrade...they returned it on Friday at 1.00pm.  As a result we couldn't test it beforehand....and boy what a huge pain in the bellybutton it was....I must have installed it (by logging on as admin) on every machine 8 or 9 times.

Basically I was the IT managers squeak...and dealt with the individual workstations.  IT told me what to do and I did it.  I only saw the "tip of the icebeg" because I didn't do any server work.

Anyway...its done and we are up and running...zero down time.

Again...you IT guys ROCK.

Easy solution LePaul.  When I did that move, I kept all cords (Ether, power...) attached to the servers and put a bungie cord around each server to hold the cords in place.
Each end was labeled as to where it would plug in (connect the dots theory).

It was a miracle the phone company did not botch it up, but it went pretty good, overall.

We're moving offices on Friday.

As I've been officially 'disowned' by our IT department I'm gonna stand back and laugh.

Our IT guys have got no clues about networks, and I got in da toejam for connecting my own laptop (a Sony Vaio) to the network because the company only provided me with a 4 year old Compaq. When they found out I got one of 'those' emails, saying I was no longer required as their IT contact in the branch. I even provided them with a webtrends security rundown of the machine (and the one they provided which proved to be full of security holes) but they wouldn't budge.

So... come Friday, vegeance shall be mine!

Muahahahahahahahahahahahhahah ahahaha

Muahahahahahahahahahahahhahah a

muahaha

hahah
