My old Hard Drive is going back to IBM for warranty service and the mobo is off to ASUS for same.

I replaced the HD with a 60G Maxtor on sale at Best Buy for $59

until the IBM gets back and a Gigabyte GA-7VAX because it seems good and it was priced right.

Anyway, I want to set this up to have the option of booting into XP for the everyday and sticking with W98SE for my AH/CH Speedkeys stuff.

So, how do I go about this in the most efficient manner?

Install Windows 98 into the C:\ partition on drive.

When you are done, install Windows XP into a diferent partition on drive.

You will now have the ability to select wich OS to boot into.

No. When you turn the computer on you will have 2 choices. You just use the arrow keys and hit enter for the OS you want to boot up.

or with two separate drives, install win98 on drive C then XP on drive D

as stated you'll receive a countdown prompt to chose which OS to boot from right after the BIOS screen clears

been doing it for about a year here, best of both worlds

Just out of curiosity Why do you want to be able to boot up 2 OS's? Whats the whole point of it. Just wondering:confused:

with XP I get around the 4 gig limit on file size for digital movie capture and with Win98 my X45 works the way it is suppose to

There's apparently some "issues" between MS XP and CH's Speedkeys for programming stick and throttle.

I've heard of the CH Speedkey issues with XP/2k also Toad.

Just make sure you load 98 first, then XP. You won't need to do anything in the BIOS as XP will set up a dual boot script that runs at bootup and allows you to select one or the other. But... it only does this if there is another OS present when it is installed.

I'll be putting it all together after T-Day dies down.

BTW, I want to copy all of an old drive on to this new 60GB jobber and then format the old one. Any tips on the best way to do this? There's documents, pix and E-mails I'd like to save and it's going to take some time to sort through them.

Dual Boot - yes, you can partition a drive, but for as little as a HDD costs, I would do what I have done and install two of them. That way you are protected in the even of hardware failure.

Get the Disk Utility software for your drive, and use it to format the drive and, if it's new, to define it to the system - drive letter etc. I've got two IBM GXP deskstars, W2000Pro on one, W-Me on the other. To switch, I get into the BIOS and switch the boot sequence - drives Tomato nuts! But it works. You might need the Y-splitter power supply adaptor if there's no spare power supply for the additional drive. And get the 80-wire IDE cable, and not the 40 - the 80 will be faster.

not sure how the formatting the drive will affect the dual boot, not sure which drive the info is on.

can you burn the data you want to save to cd? then you can foramt the drive and start with two new clean ones..

Set drive you want to copy as master, and new one as slave(make sure new one is partitioned and formatted). If the new drive came w/sw, then it should have a drive copy utility. If not you'll need a sw utility like Powerquests Drive Copy. Follow instructions and basically just copy C: drive to D: drive.
When done just change the new drive jumpers back to master.
Bootup and walla, new drive is your C: drive.

For dualboot, you can let windows do it like mentioned earlier. But you can't use ntfs file system.
I use a 3rd party util (partition magic) for a few reasons;
1: have more than 2 os's
2: like keeping each os in it's native file system
3: keep each os hidden from each other.
4: real easy to work with.

Yea I know, hiding every partition has it's pitfalls too, have to install common apps across each partition but, with today's hd sizes that becomes a moot point, I feel.

Toad - if you do go the 2-drive route, don't forget to change the jumper settings on the drives - Master with Slave Present, and Slave. The MSWP will be the one on the end of the cable. It doesn't really matter which drive is which.

When booting up, whichever disk is nominated as the first in the sequence will become drive C.
