only problem I see in the future is graphics will be so good that censorship for mature content will become a problem.

Imagine the psycological effects on young minds as they blow away troops with 37mm ostie cannon fire, all in super hi res realistic detail.   (we've all seen the troops on the tank in 'saving private ryan' yuk messy!)

SIM developers will be stuck between a need for accurate reallife simulation (for those people that cry out for absolute realism in a sim) and a need to make a 'Game' with content acceptable for everyone.

I have a friend that wont play 'operation flashpoint' as he says he finds it disturbing.

then again maybe in 10 years people wont be so shocked. :)

My opinion, we won't top the "graphics hill" untill atleast 10 years if ever, I mean its just allmost impossible to get it 100% realistic, even if the computer can handle anything, its then a question of how good the artist is.
But when Graphics get that advanced, I think it will become more game designe (the most important thing IMO), and maybe people will start coming up with new and original games & game Ideas.. Like how to make the most realistic ww2 inviroment possible, whith squads, squad leaders etc. basically like 1 never ending scenario..
Stuff like being able to walk around, pick up and do stuff with allmost anything.  Having to walk to hanger and actuelly get in a plane and stuff. that would be really cool.
I'm really getting into programming, modeling, animating etc. and there is just so much stuff you can & cant do yet, I think we still have a good ways to go before we can make allmost 100% realistic games, maybe someday it will be to the point where worlds can be made with billions of billions of individuel grains of dirt/sand !!!

Not trying to be a pessemist but I don't think this game will exist in another 10 years. I look back in the history of the games (online and offline) that I've played, and none of them that I considered state of the art back then have lasted the test of time. The combat flight sims that do exist will be incredibly detailed though, but people will still be complaining about the same things they complain about now. There are some things that time will never change.

In ten years we should have 1.11. 1.12 if they really hustle.

In ten years the graphics will be a bit better, but other aspects will not improve.  A bit?  Well, some current games have graphics that are nearly photorealistic.  Any improvements past that will require significant horsepower, which will be available, but it won't be a striking visual improvement over something that is already pretty good.

One aspect that won't improve: warps.  It is not likely that the infrastructure will improve the current 100-200 ms transmission times.  A plane moving at 400 mph moves twice its own length during a 100 ms delay.  That makes MMPOGs an iffy thing requiring extrapolative prediction.  Even if  some new direct to server infrastructure became available you would still be limited by the speed of light (about 30 msec round trip just across the US- much longer to Europe or Asia).

One area that could be significantly improved is immersion via 3D virtual reality presentation.  But, those types of head mounted displays have been around for a long time- how come they aren't common already?

BTW- someone mentioned voice command.  Hasn't that already existed for quite awhile (ie the Microsoft Voice Command peripheral)?

Graphics will be better, game play will be worse.  Look at older game imersion factor vs todays games.

The U.S. Air Force is currently working on a "thought control" helmet and aircraft.  The pilot literally flies the plane just by thinking.  It has already been tested in simulators and works surprisingly well.  In addition to that, they also have a special mock up cockpit that has multiple speakers surrounding the pilot.  Computer controlled sound inputs from the radio allow the cockpit to emit the communications such that the pilot can tell the relationship of position by the direction the sound comes from and how loud it is.

Now, think about this...if we can read brain waves coming out and make some sense of it, and translate it into a useable signal, why can't we do the reverse and put information into the mind via modulated signals?

Couple this idea with the current state of genetic research and I can see people actually having jacks put into the base of their skull in order to "jack in" to the net for some serious virtual reality.
I dunno if that will happen in 10 years, but I'll bet it happens in my life time.  Also, there is a company that has already developed a system that "inputs" signals into your brain and causes you to "feel" certain tactil things like heat, cold, etc.  Couple that with the jack and virtual reality takes on a lot more than just visual stimulation.

Imagine AH where you feel the G forces, or you feel the bullets as they rip through your plane and into you (a thumping feeling, of course, we don't want to inflict real pain on anyone).

Photorealistic graphics aren't that far off, and if those companies keep designing these multi-thousand processor super computers, it won't be long before the computers will be designing the graphics for the games themselves.

The shortcomings of transmitting signals over a net though are going to be around for years and years.  Still, if everyone had a 30ms or less connection, with huge bandwidth and it was super consistent, then I think the problems we experience now would hardly be noticeable.

In 10 years none of us will be playing AH as we know it.

Activist groups will succeed in closing Aces High because of its non-PC status, and reopen it as the new and improved "Equals High."

They will fix the unbalanced (and obviously racist) planeset by adding finctional aircraft with no nation of origin.  This way nations that never participated in WWII dont have to worry about being represented in the game.

Every aircraft will perform exactly the same so as not to give any advantages to any particular aircraft.  Of course all aircraft will be powered by period accurate solar powered engines (combustion engines pollute the air you know).  This way every aircraft is considered the absolute best and no one will ever whine again.

Each aircraft will be painted in a rainbow of colors so as not to offend the color of the player and all external identification marks will be removed.

Every aircraft will be a 60 Perk ride, so as not to offend the lesser aircraft.  This way, every plane has an equal opportunity to be flown.

There will no longer be countries as we know them - Bishop, Rook, and Knight.  Instead, a universal "country system" will take its place where everyone is on the same side and is refered to as a "Chess Piece."  Sure, there's some confusion about who to shoot, but this way Rooks arent being discriminated against.

The mute feature as speech control will be completely replaced by a new and improved "feel good" system where you can select from a list of pre-typed phrases such as "Great victory, isnt this fun!"  "I almost had you, shucks!" and "If you are available, A# is being visited by the Chess Pieces, and we could use your help!  Thanks!" to communicate with your fellow players.

Youre plane will be armed with "Tolerance Darts" so you can inflict PC into youre opponent (there is some debate over whether or not the word "opponent" is PC)  "Real" ammunition is deemed too violent in a video game by this time and banned.  The wonderful side effect of this is that you never virtually "kill" anyone.  In fact, the word "kill" has long since been forbidden and youre "partner" (good alternative to "opponent," no?) is now "Marking" you.  This way, no one is ever shot down and none of the pilots feel substandard in any way.

If any pilot does in fact feel substandard, or in any way lesser of an online pilot than his fellow feathered friend, he may bring his case before "Tech" (The "Hi" part was cut off because it denoted that he was "above" the others playing his game.) and he will determine whether or not perk reperations will be paid out to the victim.

Read about something a few years ago but haven't seen anything on it since. A company was working to induce motion sensation through sound waves applied to the ear through a device similar in physical appearance to a hearing aid. Sounded like it had real potential.

No.
Easy question. the code base will be 13 years old by then and moores law will have taken cpus from 500 mhz to 16 ghz.
AH will be playable on a watch in 10 years.
