GeForce4 Ti4200 Frame Rate Issues
« on: December 06, 2002, 02:00:56 AM »
I seem to be having some issues with my frame rates with my new card.
My processor is Duron1200, 380meg of SDR Ram

When i fly over a field with smoke, planes etc, i drop below 10 fps.

Ive tried 1024x760 32bit and 1280x1024 32 bit same results with and without enabling palletized.

I am running Det 40.92 drivers. I will try the 30.82 and see if that changes.

Im getting low 5000's for 3DMark2001 benchmarks

Another question i have is. When i run the 3DMark2001, it states my FSB as being 66mhz. But when i check it with CPUID it says i am at 100mhz.. ???

Im kinda pissed as this card is not doing much better than my ATI Radeon 64 Sdr in AH. It should blow it away.

The video card will let you run at a higher resolution before framerates start to drop.

On your machine(same thing happens on mine, I can run at 1600x1200x32 and get the same framerates as 800x600) the RAM and CPU are most likely the main bottleneck.  AH isnt particularly demanding of video cards, but does demand a lot from the CPU.

Also check and make sure you have turned off FSAA in vid drivers.

I have FSAA off. all the bells and whistles off. If i fly in open sky, i run around 75-80fps. If i get near planes etc, around 40-50 fps. If i get around a base with smoke, more than 20 fighters and im strafing. I see fps drop below 10 briefly. I dont think the issue is with my Vid card though. Im getting an XP2000 chip and 256meg of DDR and see where that puts me.

The SDR is your hold up right now. Im sure when you get the new DDR sticks you will be stable at 75fps or so.

I run a dual P3-1000 with a Gf4 4200, nothing overclocked. I run at 1600x1200x32. If I disable FSAA I get from 70-95 fps depending upon the action and the altitude. Enabling Quincunx FSAA halves that.

yep..gald to hear others are having this problem..
Its the damm smoke.  Wait till u get on the tail guns of a
buff form with engines smokin and yer frame rate is measured with a sundial.  I started a thread a cupple weeks ago
requesting some kind of half-smoke or something.
I can run at 40-72fps (my max is 72) most of tthe time,
but when i try to gun my smokey b17 form, its like a
slide show.  It really sux.

p4 1.7
gf4 mx 440
768 SDRaM <--prolly the culprit
1200x1024x32 <--just as good as 600x800.  Dont make any
 sense???

g4 mx may be the bottleneck...

but I'm not sure,
it's just that I've heard about problems with the MX series

All the GF4MX is is an overclocked GF2. The Ti series are the ones that use the NV25. MX is a NV17, I believe. I have an AMD XP 1800+ (1.53 ghz)running Win98SE, 256 meg DDR RAM, GF4 Ti4200 128 meg video, and I ALWAYS see more than 60 fps.

XP2000

I didnt get the ram yet, but i did upgrade to XP2000. The Duron, although a good chip, just doesnt have the juice for higher graphics. I am getting a steady 75 fps with occasional drops to 53 under heavy action. Much nicer. I expect to increase that even more with DDR ram.

Im running mid 9000's on 3dMark2001 SE. I know i can tweak it to get above 10000, but im happy for now.

Also Gforce4MX440 wouldnt have done much for me. I checked the stats and it was similar to the Radeon 64 SDR. Spend the extra bucks and get the Ti4200 at least. You wont regret it.

$178.00 for card
$100.00 for XP2000 chip.

Not too bad for a quick upgrade.
