it does but there is still one good side to this. supply and demand!

in san francisco, the DA just won't prosecute weed cases, the people would flip out if he did. in fact we recently voted yes for the city to consider growing it's own supply for medical purposes whether the feds let us or not. for all intents and purposes marijuana is decriminalized here and people generally don't give a toejam what the government thinks.

my point is.....since the cops aren't falling all over themselves to bust in your door and haul to jail for growing- many people here do grow. the product they grow is good hydroponic indoor weed, no pesticide and very potent. they are more likely to use the money they make buying video games or paying their rent or going for a better quality steak or something, not plotting terrorist attacks.

since it's not as risky, less criminally minded people are doing it. in a place where they can't wait to lock potheads up for life, only the absolute most hardcore criminals would take the chance, here an average joe might try it just for some extra income or to support their own habit and maybe sell to a few people they know well. i don't know many people who buy from a shady guy on the street, usually people buy from their friends here.

the pablo escobar types have a vastly inferior product- they have to ship crappy dry weed in from mexico or some place and it smells like gasoline and who knows how they grew it or cured it or what they sprayed on it - not to mention the fact that no one likes to deal with people like that. if no one wants crappy weed the big importers have to turn to something else or go try to stir up business in some oppressive bible belt state where they think locking up potheads is the way to go.

legalization would get rid of people like that in the trade completely but decriminalization at least takes it out of the hands of drug lords and back into the hands of 'small business' owners where it should be. even if they are still black marketeers.

like others weed just doesn't add up to me-

smoke $20 worth of weed, eat $50 worth of grocerys, sleep through a $350 work day.

but not everybody gets the same effect.
I know many who become very focused and productive after a few tokes.  meanwhile if I where to smoke enough to get any of the possitive effects I'd be the one sitting in the corner blowing spit-bubbles

Decriminalize possession, but not sale.  Let people grow their own.  Let adults use it in the privacy of their own home.  Take the profits and "forbidden fruit" aspect out of it.

No taxes.  No government sanctioned commercial weed.

Care to point out an example?  I know for a fact that it isn't here in Alberta, nor BC, having my father be a police officer in one, and my best friend in another.  My 1st cousin instructs at RCMP depot in SK, and I guarantee you that it isn't there yet.  I also have a cousin in TO that is a cop, and he charges people with possesion monthly.

BC has a VERY informal policy of just seizing small amounts of contraband, BUT this is TOTALLY at the discression of the officer.  A guy I know who got mouthy got charged and convicted for having one little bulb on his floor mat in his car, and that was in 2002.

As far as the letter of the Law stands, there is ZERO decriminilization so far.

You can find people smoking pot out sides the bars here in Ottawa almost every Thur, Fri, Sat. night.  It's just not enforecd by the OCRPS.

Sure, that is the case in BC in a lot of places, and even here in Calgary to a certain extent.  But make no mistake, judgement on the part of the cops is in no way decriminilization.  If a shift supervisor or cheif called on the radio and said he was passing by that location in 45 seconds, bet your bellybutton eveyone with a joint would be up against the wall getting charged, as it is still against the law to use, trade, grow and posses mary-J EVERYWHERE in Canada.

Sure, for testing purposes, that is in no way decriminlization for the rank and file.  BTW, the sterioded genetically manipulated trees from this endeavour were gotten a hold of by some growers in BC, this is why stuff on the street has increased in potency in the last year or two.

Heck, there is VERY few prescriptions and permits issued for medical use, fewer than 300 in this Province yearly.  Again, that certainly doesn't qualify as decriminilized.  The cops here in Calgary bust that crusader guy, who has a permit, virtaully every month for either cultivation (illegal), distribution (same), and having more than a personal amount (anything more than an onze or so, and they ding him every time).  Sure doesn't sound decriminilized for me.

If you truly think it is decriminilzed, I suggest testing your theory by lighting up a joint outside the entry to your local police department, then explain how you are certain that it is not a crime, and to leave you alone.  

PS. Have your lawyer with bail money standing by, you'll need it.

 

I think you are mistaking "normalization" of public use with "decriminilization", which has in no way occured yet in this country as far as the criminal code is concerned.

Hmm i lived in Alberta up until 3 years ago and I was sure they had passed a law around that time or maybe a little longer, stating carrying up to an ounce was no longer a trip to court, just a fine...

In ontario... a single joint gets you hauled off to court...
