need info re: real life RCAF 575 Terrier Sqdn
« on: December 10, 2002, 11:05:42 PM »
My grandfather flew with this squadron in WW2, unfortunately, he never made it home so I never knew him. My dad doesn't really remember him either. I do know that in more recent years, the name 575 Terrier Squadron was attached to an Air Cadets flight training squadron at CFB Southport. the only information I've uncovered so far seems to indicate that they trained in P40s and the like, and flew operational sorties from RAF bases in Hurricanes and Typhoons that had been manufactured under license in Canada by Canada Car.
If anyone has any information whatsoever regarding this outfit and its role in WW2, I'd be eternally grateful. all!

Didn't find much info, but the sponsoring committee for the RCAF 575 "Terrier" is Bombardier and Branch #65, Royal Canadian Legion.

Here is a link to their roll of honour.

Seems like the aircadet website is going through revision, not much info there.

Goodluck.

A friend of mine informed me that the Air Cadets 575 Terrier Flight Training Sqdn was disbanded when CFB Southport was closed in the late 80s. In another thread I had posted in the Vehicles discussion, some are saying that 575 was a C-47 transport squad. Is it possible that the C-47 pilots were only one part of 575, or that my dad has the number or situation wrong? What I mean by this is is it possible that my granddad's unit was attached to 575, or served alongside 575? The base that he trained at is long gone... there are a few remnants of it near MacDonald, Manitoba. Some "old timers" around there remeber seeing P-51s toward the end of the war, as well as Hurris, typhoons and the occassional Spit. No hard facts so far though.
