WW2 era, many IJN/IJA pilots can understand/read English.
but, i think They called ''Gura-man (Grumman)'' for all ''blue carrier fighters''.  
F4F,F4U,F6F...
maybe, F6F is ''newtype Gra-man'', F4u is ''Gra-man with gal wings''

and japanese civirians (peoples) know these name ''Gura-man''.
My grandmother's sister said,
''american's 'Gra-man' tryed shoot me when I was student''.
so, U.S.''Gra-man'' plane factory is most popular name in WW2 era japan.  

###no probrem about her, the 'Gra-man' pilot was dweeb vulcher

btw, F6F nickname is ''Kuman-bachi''. means ''bear bee''(Bumble bee).
because these engines sound is very noisey like bee, I think.

B-24 nickname is ''Con-sori'' means these factory name.
sometimes B-24, B-25, B-26 are called all''con-sori''.
but, B17 is special.
its very dangaous bomber with many MGs. so, pilots know these name is ''model17 bomber''.  

p-39 nickname is ''Iwashi'' means 'a kind of fish'
''Iwashi'' is very poor & small & cheep fish.
Zero pilots could shot down them easyly like ''eat breckfast''  

I dont know p-47 nickname in japan WW2 era.
I will read more books about these intersting Info.

I believe the BF-109 "Emil" is incorrect.  The name 'emil' came around because people were calling the aircraft by its phonetic name.  E in German is 'emil', phonetically spoken.  

I do not know much about this, I am just going off an artical I read a year or so ago. It would take some research to find out the real name of the 109E.

Thanks for the information. I like to get a different perspective on the Airwar. I think the Japanese perspective is lost sometimes.

I have read accounts of aircombat with Zero's (or unidentified A/C) at high speed with F4U's. I always thought the Zero was a little faster than it was given credit for based on these accounts.

Also I always read that the F4U was called the "Whistling Death" by Japanese pilots. Is this real or wartime fiction? It sounds a little contrived to me (Made up).

C205 = Macchi MC 205V "Veltro" "Veltro" it's a term used by Dante in "Divina Comedia" to name the man that had to save Italy from foes, who he really intended it's still in discussion

BTW, HanaG     I would spell katuobushi   katsuobushi (pron:  ka-tsu-o-bu-shi) & spell whale kujira (ku-ji-ra) and Godzilla Gojira (go-ji-ra).
