What I love about Aces High
« on: December 29, 2002, 08:33:45 PM »
Five years ago... I wouldn't have been able to believe Aces High if you would have described it to me back them. It would have seemed like a dream come true. Hundreds of pilots 4...5...6 hundred online at once... all playing chess in a virtual battlefield in the sky. Not one drone among them. Well maybe... no... I won't go there  =). I've said it before... and I will say it again... Aces High is the most significant piece of software that has ever graced my hard drive. The worst parts of it, which I won't get into here... are caused by how certain people use it.

So much gets said about what is needed to change... or what someone thinks is wrong... lets have a thread solely about what you love about Aces High. Come one... unless you are sick (and I know there are some of you out there) you are here because you love it. If you don't.... you are wasting energy... feel free to move on.

What I love about Aces High:
------------------------------------------------
Best view system I've seen in any flight sim
Ability to squelch
Built in voice
SOOOooo many choices about what you want to do
Very good flight models from what I can gather
So many other pilots online
Squads
VERY hard to master... can lose edge in a few days of not flying
So many planes vehicles etc...
Reasonable price
No cheating (yes... there are some shady behaviors)

Next...

What I like about AH:

Flight models
Large variety of aircraft
Gunnery/ammunition/ballistics model
Functional eye candy/graphics
All air opponents are real humans
Ability to fly off of carriers
View system
All cockpits are custom to aircraft type, but use generic gauges so you don't have to waste too much time learning basics about different planes
Text "radio"
Squelch

Most of the rest is chaff for me...  Very nicely detailed chaff, but IMHO just a distration from the real event.  Turn back the clock to WB 1.07, furball uber alles! :)
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Seeing lots of hit sprites on a plane I am shooting at, lots of smoke and preferrably parts falling off it.  Gives me a wicked rush every time.

It's like that one shot you make in a round of golf that makes the score for that round irrelevant.

the new netcode is great for me
shows damage a lot sooner then it used to. i hit someone with a 30mm and that piece comes right off

i love the radio channels

the hardworking cm team

the fact htc listens to the player community, even if 99% of the time they're griping and squeaking

cons

my squad

me163

and a lot of other stuff which i cant remember at the moment :)

every couple of months i go into a burnout mode but it doesnt last for too long, so many cool things to get back into ,

My Favorite Things (with apologies to Julie Andrews!)

Hit sprites on noses and bomb drops on Osties
Bright burning HQ's and black smoking CV's
Luftwaffe airplanes without any wings
These are a few of my favorite things

True Friends and Squadmates who cover your six
Millions of ways for an ACM fix
Planes that have a star & bar on the wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Guys in white chutes with lots of hit flashes
Multiple vultches as you make your passes
Ambushes on La's that sucessfully spring
These are a few of my favorite things

When my guns miss
When the Zeke stings
When I'm flying bad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I just feel so glad.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

I have read a lot of ww2 flying books, before I entered the
online simulation world, some years ago.
Descriped in almost all books, was tactics and how the
pilots optimised their chances, for a kill and survival.

The cool thing about entering the online arena, is that everything
you read suddenly sink in, and actually works. And you under-
stand the next read book much better from the pilots point of
view. How low and slow alone deep in enemy terrtory is a very
bad thing.

The feel of the game, almost like beeing there.

Well, from a long time Airwarrior vet. All I can say is that.  If AW4 made it to the shelves, I would hope that this is what it would have looked like.  This is by far the best online air sim I have ever played.  I am not talking about box sets, but even those do not offer the user this much versatility.  Well Done HT, well done.
