Proposed new city rules would ban spitting, smoking, skateboarding, and stinking on city buses.

Its not a law ripsnort.  Its a city ordinance.  Big difference.

Besides, SOB doesn't usually ride the bus.

Funny this ordinance has been passed.  While at University, I used to drive the transit buses (natural gas and also 1940s London Double-Deckers) that were mainly utilized by the students.  One day a guy got on and sat right behind me - he smelled so bad that my eyes watered and my nose burned.  I'm not exagerrating, not even when I say I felt I could taste it it smelled so bad.  I had to open my window despite it being 30 degrees outside.  After he left, it took 30 minutes for the odor to dissipate!  I can remember saying to myself, "There oughta be a law...."

You can't ride the bus if...
"emanates a grossly repulsive odor that is unavoidable by other Bend Extended Area Transit customers"

I don't see anything wrong with that Grun.  If the bums don't like it, tough toejam.  Besides, this probably wouldn't garner enough media attention for the ACLU to get involved.

SOB

PS...I run into enough crazies on this BB, so I really don't need to ride the bus!  :D

I used to ride the bus every day for a couple of years unltil I got my car a few years ago. The homeless did sometimes "smell" and were obviously dirty but I feel they have right to use public transport as long as they are not drunk, stoned, or clealy abusive or disruptive etc.  to other passengers and of course can pay.

I bet the ACLU is busy banning another insensitive Mark Twain book in some posh Seattle school to notice this problem - clealy something one could contest on moral grounds..

Where did they get the cash?  Seems to me they should be spending that money on food instead of bus rides.

Well, I do agree that the homeless should have the right to ride the bus, but I don't think that being homeless gives them a pass on the rules.  And I just want to clarify that there's a difference between smelly and putrid stank.  If I do need to ride the bus at some point, I don't want to be forced to sit in the same enclosed area with someone who's been pissing themselves for the last few days.

I dont know exactly, but I do think they need to get around.

As I remember many of them had garbage bags full of aluminum cans and went around collecting them for some income from recycling.

From my experience on busses this law is clearly aimed at clearing them of homeless riders, and I think thats wrong.

Problem there is SOB whats putrid as opposed to just smelly? And who makes the decision? I think sooner or later people would be refused bus service because they might  "look" smelly.

Any decent lawyer would sink that ordinance in a heartbeat.  Define "grossly repulsive odor". Someone is gonna complain about an Italian guy smelling of garlic and then the real repulsive smelling stuff will hit the fan.

No worries SOB.

no cash.  they look for used bus tickets, that still have time on them.  and it's not so much for transportation. you see a lot more homeless on the bus in winter.

they just pick up used tickets and get an hour or so out of the weather where they can't get moved along for loitering.

everyone with the fare should be allowed to ride the bus. (I don't even care if they scrounge the ticket) But maybe they wouldn't be homeless if they understand basic rules like wash before going into public places.  surely even a homeless man can find a rag and some water to wash his bellybutton before ridding the bus.
