BAH! My new gun is unsafe.
« on: January 20, 2003, 11:58:24 AM »

SO I bought the Springfield armory ultra compact V10, and have now fires about 60 rounds through it. It has been failing to lock the slide back. I figured ok, prolly to much oil, I took it home cleaned it and lubed it with tetra gun grease and went back to the range.

Now not only is the slide not locking back, now when I insert a magazine, the slide drops! This is so unsafe I could not let my friend shoot it.

So I look it over, it seems like the slide catch is not engaging very well, so I look close and it looks like it is rounded. I compare it to my full size 1911, and it is not shaped the same so I swap the slide releases, and that helps, but it is still very easy to drop the slide. I did not shoot it, with the new catch.

I am going to call Springfield today and squeak, I think the notch on the slide may not be right either.

What a Fu$!ing drag, I paid 850 bucks after tax for this thing and it is messed up from the factory??

On the up side, my Sig220, performed flawlessly! Man I should have bought another Sig!!

Edit!  BAH now fixed, stupid cut and paste!!! BAH !!!

Are you using the factory magazines?

If so, try a 7 rounder from Wilson Combat.  If thats not the problem, send it back to SA and have them fix it - I have a fullsize SA 1911 and it hasnt had ONE failure of any kind in over 2500 rounds - thats impressive.

Skuzzy, its easy to get hooked - just pick up a good qulity .45, load some tracer rounds, and head to the local range.

Upon arrival, cut out a target to look like an N1k2 and blast away - youll be hooked in no time.  :D

I tried the factory mags and some Kimber mags, did the same with both.

It really sounds like the slide release is defective, and springfield seems to agree.

They will not ship out a slide release, I have to ship the whole gun to them, and they are going to pay for shipping. BAH!

Scuzzy... You do not understand shooting or 1911s?

The whole gun thing is a bit elusive to me.

It's not that I have never fired a gun.  Fired plenty when I was younger (cant even count how many rounds fired when I was in the Air Force).  Dad always had guns around the house.

I just never really cared for it one way or the other.

Is it a hobby to you guys?  And that may explain it.  It just ain't a hobby that interests me.

Kimber?  GOOD GOD!  Some of the finest "production customs" out of the box... but their magazines are crap - maybe even worse than SA.  Even if its not the problem, go pick up some WC mags - well worth the price.

Good luck with everything - its usually standard practice for any gun manf. to take the whole gun from you and diagnose the problem rather than ship out 20 parts until the issue is solved.  SA has a good reputation for this kind of stuff - you shouldnt have any issues.

Yeah I was planing on getting some Wilson 7 rounders anyway.

Hmmm, well I gues it is a win, win shipping it out to them. I am going to insure it up, so if they fix it good. If it gets lost, then Sig 228 here I come!

What? They let Californians have guns? YOU'LL SHOOT YOUR EYE OUT! I have a 380 Bersa that does the same thing. Scart the pistols outta me first time i used it.
But as long as you have your finger off the trigger it should'nt fire because there is a secondary safety in the hammer mech. But send it in have them check it . Better safe than sorry.

Ahh,..okay.  In that context, I get it.

I like RC flying, but not everyone does.

For some reason I always pictured gun folk like some maniacal fanatics who preferred a gun to people.  Don't take it wrong.

I know it's a bizarre picture, and I can't even tell you why its there.

Good luck getting it fixed.

Q. How do you make a gun owner dizzy? A. Put him in a barrel, and tell him to pee in the corner - lol.

hehe - no worse than the dental jokes we have to endure. :p

Sorry GtoRA2,..I hadn't realized I left an opening for that response.

My apologies.

I was rather enjoying the discussion.  Just trying to get some info.
