Score/Rank in the new version of AH
« on: January 22, 2003, 04:26:54 AM »
I'm going to be interested to see who gets the high scores/ranks in the new improved AH 2, or whatever the Mission Arena will be called. I think the scores/ranks will be vastly different from the pattern we see for the Main Arena. I was recently speaking in person to an AH guy who got his rank to a single digit value, and he told me how he did it. The word "vulch" cropped up in his explanation. :D  That will all be buggery-doo in a Mission Theatre, and I don't think that many of the kidz will have the patience to hack it in there. Why, I might even review the scores and ranks from time to time for the Mission Theatre when we get it. :)

The ranking system as we have now is open to manipulation by those that know how to use it to their advantage.

For example, I have been experimenting with the ranking (and by definition scoring) system now for the last three tours.

I am an ok but nothing special or exceptional stick etc, but I know that by next month I will finish in the top 30, maybe higher.

This will not be via skill, it will be via a slavish devotion to the points system. I know that this is sad and I am seeking help for my affliction, damn it though I am competitive by nature and if AH use a ranking system I can't stop trying to improve upon previous months ranks.

Wipass - understood. But it was not you I had in mind when I wrote the above - it was someone else, but he said much the same as you did.

I did once get to no. 5 in WB fighter rankings, but slipped to finish at no. 8 because I refused to fly on Jet Day. The scores were one thing, but the ranks were different. I was not a hotshot as a fighter pilot, but had the rank of Colonel conferred upon me - for hitting the no. 1 spot in the bomber rankings one time. - only had to hit it - did not have to finish at no. 1.  There were many pilots better than me, but who had lower rankings because they flew only one type of plane, all the time.

I think I told you that a particular person was vultching a lot but I dont really know thats true. I do know that vultching ruins my attack results but someone else may have found a way to improve things a bit. I wont vultch in fighter mode because I so often get killed or get killshooter. The best way to kill me is find me distracted with cons underneath me (as some have discovered recently). Im working on that but thats why I have been shying away from vultching.

Anyway catch me online and Ill tell you how I score in fighters. I will even show you if we can set it up. The baltic map is particularly frustrating for this type of sortie though so it wont be easy. When it works out though the potential is for sixty kills per hour or more so you can imagine it will be fast paced.:D Its not gamey. It is risky. But its also so much fun I cant stop!:D

A good place to experiment with the ranking system is in the CT. Since there are far fewer people involved, one can gauge results easier.

Now, there have been, and will continue to be, players who game it (a polite way of saying that they cheat like hell :D ). Examples are:

Squad mates on opposite sides, one letting the other shoot down his bomber formations over and over again (we've seen up to 34 kills in 15 minutes).

Exploiting bugs, such as when a CT map was mistakenly set up with the ability to kill friendly objects. Squadies were playing on both sides, one killing his own base while the other squadie flew in troops.

Despite a few little cheats like the above, generally one gets a top ranking by doing equal amounts of everything, and doing it well.

Vulching is generally frowned upon in the CT, so that's out of the equation. Milkrunning is common, but if you can't bomb or shoot worth a hoot, it doesn't help. Besides, rebuilt times in the CT are usually a lot less than in the MA.

Finally, the CT has the best terrains by far. Examples being the beautiful Finland map, and the absolutely stunning Peal Harbor map.

There's really no comparison.  One will be set up to score based on completing missions / assignments.  The other is set up to reward everything but that.

Once you get to where you're trying to hold a rank in the top 5, you'll discover that it SUCKS. I've only flown 39 odd hours so far this tour it's that bad... down from 120 or something last month.
