F4u's have landing gear air-brakes ... my problem with them is that one hit of the g (gear) key puts gear all the way down as far as the FM is concerned...... at least it feels this way to me

There should be 3 -4 second delay until pilot gets good slowing power from gears IMO they need the time to extend.

This time would make the descion to use gear brakes much harder IMO .. becuas ean experianced pilto will see them coming out then try to outrun the f4 as it slows.... if you aiming for an overshoot and the f4u pulls this .. your screwed ... instant slow down

It was the landing gear doors that were used as an airbrake, not the landing gear itself. It is quite right for it to have very little delay.

Actually the F4U should be able to drop the doors separately from the main gear as well.

yes the gear in all planes comes down instantly.. though the animation doesn't....

Used to at least....

ps. Ah, so thats why the F4Us gear come down upto 300mph, where as nearly everything else can only do it at 190-200mph?

I think drag-wise the gear of the F4Us can't be out a bit. It's either out or in.

If I remember correctly when the gear starts to fold out immediately all parts of the gear get outside of the fuselage, it doesn't extend much till fully down.

On other planes this might be different, e.g. p38. Don't know if drag rises slowly while getting the gear down.

I think I read somewhere that F4U pilots didnt actually lower the gear, but opened the gear doors for air brakes.

Maybe HT could implement an airbrake feature to open the only the gear doors (shift + C)?

second question would be .. why do the f4u 'airbrakes' seem to work better than than the jugs or p38's dive brakes?

Because the -47 and -38 don't have 'airbrakes', they have dive flaps. I'll let one of the more technically minded 'splain ya to how the dive flaps work, but to put it in a nutshell they help bring the nose up and, in the -38, are a counter for the mach tuck at high speeds that pushes the nose down til ya auger in.

In this game, you can extend the gear up to about 300 knots in the F4U. This effectively replicates the actual use of a partial lowering of the gear selector in the cockpit which only dropped the gear doors which were used as a brake. But as with all aircraft, you have speed limitations on this in real life or the doors rip off or get jammed. So it works out just fine. Only problem is, it's easier to notice when a corsair is braking 'cause the gear is fully out, but I'm not sure why anyone would want to slow down in a Hog in the MA.
