If those 7 astronauts would have died in a bus crash while enroute to the training, would you be lighting candles to them right now? No.

People are treating them like saints. Their lives weren't any more valuable than the average joe who loses his life daily on the road. At least these people died living their dream.

Just to put things to perspective.

Hey Captain obvious, I think the difference and point is most people driving to 7-11 aren’t really riding the super-science technology wire at Mach 6 in outer space, something so uncommon and truely amazing, that it drives and inspires the pride and imagination of ones country. Hell, the whole world.

Hense when there is a failure, it's news worthy, and reminds us even in our highest level of achievment, we are indeed mortal. I could go without 3 more threads on the same topic, but you 2 are pretty much fools.

Creamo so anyone riding a vehicle expensive and popular enough becomes a superhero or as it seems, a saint?

The death of someone driving to 7-11 is not as important as someone crashing from space?

Interesting.

Also remember that those astronauts were the product of zillions of dollars of training.  Training that we (yanks) paid for.  When our fancy space vehicle is destroyed with our countrymen who were incredibly highly trained with our money, we are going to be pissed.  To a foreigner they might just be 7 dead people, not significant in the world total.  But to us they mean more.

Yes.

I now promote you to Commander obvious. You have quite the knack for understanding these things that are so apparent.

I understand all that, you're pissed for losing your money etc.

But all this stuff with poems, pictures and such.. It seems far fetched to me. I'd even understand if you were close relatives of these people, or even knew them personally. To me it looks like this whole ordeal is taking religious proportions.

Maybe I just don't understand the way you yanks think.

It's sad to think that this tragedy is causing so much ill feeling in this thread, and I won't be surprised to see it locked.  And yes, it is a tragedy.  :(

[True that the death of all men is a loss.  HOWEVER-someone driving to the 7-11 to get a beer, loaf of bread, or some formula is not quite the same as someone who lost their life while trying to better mankind-the experiments carried on in the space program have created quite a few of the "luxuries" we earthbound fellows enjoy.  Even you have benefited (check computers etc)

So what you're saying is that every human life isn't important. A normal person paying the space program from his tax money is not worth the same consideration as a trained astronaut?

What about the human embryo, it hasn't done anything worthwhile during its lifetime. Is it's life worthless? What's the fuzz about abortion then?

I repeat, do anyone of you know any of these people personally?

If not, it really should not affect you in this way.

Some morn the loss of public people publicly, private people privately. Attempting to suggest to the readers of this board that your reaction to death , ”mrsid2”, is right while thier's is wrong is an error in judgement.

Mudder I'm not saying they are totally wrong.. I just think it's blown out of proportions. To me it seems that way..

At least I couldn't really be affected by deaths of people who I really don't know in any way counting out the media. I respect the mourn of the families and send my condolences to the ones that need it.

However I don't see the 'sacrifice' these people really did, because I'm sure they died living up their dream and that's something most of us will never have during our lifetime.

In a way I envy them, not feel sorry for them.

In my perspective I respect the hard working guys who rushed up the WTC far more than these astronauts. They never got the fame and credit during their lifetime, but that's where the real heroes are. Nobody writes poems for the average joe, even if he deserves one.

Nothing heroic about climbing inside a flying h-bomb and then setting it off on purpose knowing you can't steer it or hit the brakes while trying to defeat the most powerfull force on Earth, gravity.

Those folks may be living out a dream, but it takes serious moxy to do what they do for a regular paycheck.

The space program and it's members are one of the last chances my kids will enjoy World peace and I hope NASA doesn't run out of heroes.

Crew of Columbia, I won't let my family forget.

Simmer down you scurvy air pirates! and read the whole thread before ya lynch me!

I have met some of these heroes of our times, and times past.  they really are human you know, but I digress...

I admire and respect those heroic folks that put their lives on the line for us everyday.  I also feel an empty spot in the world whenever they pass away.  The same sized spot that I feel for "Joe Average", and then I get on with life.

I agree that some of 'us' take the tragedy of prominant people way to hard and 'mourn' far out of proportion than they do the average persons tragedy.  How many of you 'grieve' as hard for some druggy giving birth to an addicted baby?

How many of you are anti-abortion, yet cringe at the thought of adopting a hydroencephelatic child?

How many of you pay lip service to 'Christianity'?

How many of you grieve as hard for the cop on the beat, or the fireman, or librarian even, when fate deals them a low hand?

Not very damn many I am sure. :o

And that, my dear friends is the root of our social problems in the good old U.S. of A.  You're all out there beating your chests for everything but the right thing!

Which really pisses me off when I see threads of this sort.

Now, yall can call me cynical...  You can say "get your heart out of yer ass, Odee!"!  You can pretty much say anything about me that you want, and no way can I, let alone would I, dare to try to stop you.  That is your God given right, which the Constitution only puts in print for all to read and ignore should they so choose.

At least I know in my heart of hearts that what I do, and how I grieve is the "right thing for me", and I for sure am not going to make a public spectacle out of someone elses misfortune.

Thank you for reading the whole piece.  Now lynch away.
