What is an American?
« on: February 03, 2003, 03:52:42 PM »
This was touched upon in another thread today. Probably a hoax letter, but who cares:

You gotta love this Aussie!

You probably missed it in the rush of news last week, but there was actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any American.

So, an Australian dentist wrote the following to let everyone know what an American is, so they would know when they found one.

"An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish,

German, Spanish, Polish, Russian, or Greek. An American

may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or

Pakistani, or Afghan. An American may also be a Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache or one of the many

other tribes known as native Americans.

An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, or

Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims

in America than in Afghanistan. The only difference is

that in America, they are free to worship as each of them chooses. An American is also free to believe in no religion.

For that, he will answer only to God, not to the government,

or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government

and for God.

An American is from the most prosperous land in the

history of the world.
The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration

of Independence, which recognizes the God-given right of

each man and woman to the pursuit of happiness.

An American is generous. Americans have helped out

just about every other nation in the world in their time

of need. When Afghanistan was overrun by
the Soviet army twenty years ago, Americans came with

arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their

country. As of the morning of September 11, 2001,

Americans had given more than any other nation to the

poor in Afghanistan.

Americans welcome the best -- the best products,

the best books, the best music, the best food, the

best athletes. But they also welcome the least.
The national symbol of America, The Statue of Liberty,

welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched

refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless,
tempest-tossed. These, in fact, are the people who

built America.

Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the

morning of September 11, earning a better life for

their families. I've been told that the World
Trade Center victims were from at least thirty other
countries, cultures, and first languages -- including

those that aided and abetted the terrorists.

So, you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did.

So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao, and every blood

thirsty tyrant in the history of the world. But, in doing so,

you would just be killing yourself, because Americans

are not a particular people from a particular place.

They are the embodiment of the human spirit and

freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit,

everywhere, is an American.

Well done Midnight Target! We sould print this up and distribute it to everyone that "hates" Americans.
As I said in Hortland's post, as an American, I feel lately like I have a target painted on my back. I say back because that's where the shot will come from.

What is an European?

What is a Japanese?

What is an African?

Why anybody that loves progress qualifies to be an American?

Sorry, I personally think I have high values, morality, and I wish to contribute to the progress of mankind with my tiny effort.

But I don't particularly feel american.

Don't get me wrong, I've lived there for some time in several places across your big country, and I find nothing wrong with your way of living, but I prefer to be considered an European as I always feel like home when I cross the atlantic again.

I love visiting the US of A, but I wouldn't live there (except for NYC perhaps). I prefer Europe, with its inconsistencies, inner quarrels, nationalisms and whatnot. It's home :)

I think that an american from the US of A will truly understand my point, as he takes pride in living in a country that he feels integrated in. I do as well.

Daniel, aka Cyrano, an European :)

Daniel,

Of course you have a point, but you also seem to have missed the direction the post was taking.

Sometimes overanalyzing is a bad thing, or as Freud would say....

or as Groucho would say

"He may look like an idiot and talk like an idiot but don't let that fool you. He really is an idiot."

not talking about anyone in general just thought it was a funny quote.......

Nah MT, I knew where it was going, just that I have another view on the subject, that's all.

Carry on, I won't stray from the path the thread has taken :)

I think the MT's quote it's very nice.

I want just to notice one thing:

the main difference between me and a "common american" (if it exist) it's that:

I consider myself and my country PART of the world, a complex thing, composed by many different cultures and peoples, and beautiful for this complexity.

The common american think almost the same, only with the word PART changed in CENTER.

:)

Maybe this is the reason why we fight so much in this board :)

just a small clarification
Europe is a continent not a country
Japan is a (for the most part) closed society
Africa is also a continent

just saying..

I believe, semantics aside, you got the point.

I'm a member of a country belonging to the European Community.

Better? :)

Actually you are miseducated.
I know many, many people, including Americans, who go to Spain to study and prosper.

Its a nice country. You just have no idea about it (like you have no idea about anything outside the states surrounding you) so you just assume.

never been there.   Only know what I read about it's economy, unemployment GNP and racial makeup.   Oh yeah.... they used to do some exploring and were kinda mean to the people they "discovered".  Hemingway wrote a fun book about one of their revolutions and hitler tested some equipment there.

That's probly a lot more than what you know about me animal.
