Should I worry?
« on: February 14, 2003, 08:49:33 AM »
I have been making a pest of myself on a Muslim extremist bulletin board. I've done everything I can to insult and enrage the Osama bin Laden supporters at the site, and cause them to doubt the authenticity of those who post there.

What I did over time was open many different hotmail accounts under fake names - and then register on the extremist board using the fake email addresses, and then proceed to post disruptive, inflammatory posts until being kicked off by the administrator. Then I would open another account and start all over again - sometime juggling 3 different accounts, and even answering my own posts.

Well, I hit on the bright idea of impersonating the administrator (long unpronouncable Arabic name) by changing one letter in his name and stealing his avatar, which was unique on the board. I caused a great deal of havoc on that board last night untill being banned and all my posts deleted. (I am still on the board under other names though.)

My problem is this. Just before getting banned last night, someone identified my IP Address, my ISP, and the fact that I have an ADSL connection, and posted it publically for all these rabid extremists to read.

When I saw this, I immediately shut down my computer and unplugged the phone line. I happened to have a copy of Zone Alarm, so I installed it. I had been running only Windows XP firewall. Is there anything else I should do?

I'm serious. Is there anyway I could be identified or anyway they could learn my location from what they got?

too many nutjobs in the world to purposely stir them up ... If they have that, they can find out who you are, where you live and go from cyper space to your space if their raghead lovely self is so inclined...

Are you sh*tting me Eagler?????

How can they do that - find out where I live, without a court order to get it from my ISP or something?

Not trying to scare you, maybe I'm wrong - a skuzzy type could confirm, but i think if they know your isp & ip they'll be able to get your email address and account info. It would take some digging but someone with some exerience at cyper snooping, I think, would be able to drill down to it ...

edit:

what if they just get your email address? some sites give everything. including a map to the address - just from an email address

Generally, given an IP, you can find the address of the person's ISP provider.  Rarely can you trace it to a specific household.  There are a few traceroute programs available that will trace back across a map, but they probably won't be able to tell someone more than the city you live in.

What they can do with your IP (since it is probably static) is attempt to break into your computer and steal personal information, and unfortunately Windows XP is about as secure as a screen door by default.   My recommendation would be to install a good firewall (zonealarm is better than the one built into XP) and if possible, switch your IP address by making a call to your ISP and telling them what you need to in order to get it changed.  That may mean changing your ISP.

LOL, glad you enjoyed my predicerment Dracon. :)  I did have a blast for awhile, posing as a homosexual majahudeen...  strictly targeting the extremist, lunatic fringe, never regular Muslims, whom I respect.

.. but I'm low-profilin' now, I can tell ya.
