TM Elite Rudder pedal help
« on: February 15, 2003, 11:01:52 PM »
Gents it appears the problem is my rudder pedals after all.  They worked long enough this morning for me to try the demo of IL-2, and then download the latest AH version and create a new account, but when I got in a plane and tried to take off, I'd lost rudder control again.  This time when I hooked them up to a spare joystick, they weren't recognized at all.

I took them apart to check the pot, and I'm getting a low reading of 11.6K ohms and a high of 109K ohms.   Midpoint is 58.7K.   Do these values seem reasonable?

Also, in checking the cable, I find no continuity on the white hookup wire.  The red wire is configured to pin 9 on the joystick plug - can anyone tell me what pin the white wire should be connected to?   Maybe I just have to replace the plug and cable?

Seems strange to me that the cable would give out - it doesn't appear damaged in any way.

Thanks for any help!  I was so close to getting airborn again!

The values you measured sound good, as it's likely a 100k ohm pot.  I don't know if they wired the Elites the same as the RCS, but if they did, then with the pot facing you and the terminals facing up, it's red to the middle and white on the right.

Thanks, SOB.

Yep, looking at the front of the pot with the terminals up, the red wire is connected to the middle terminal and the white one is connected to the right post.

I have determined that red wire is connected to pin 9 of the plug, but the white wire doesn't seem to be connected to any pin.   Can you tell me which pin it should be connected to?   There must be a break in my white wire somewhere in the cable.

Here is a diagram of the game port connector's pin assigments:

 ----------------------------
 \  01    02    03    04    05    06    07    08  /
  \
  \   09    10    11    12    13    14    15   /
    ---------------------

Thanks!

OK, I've traced it down even further.   As I slowly take apart these pedals, I have to say I'm impressed with Thrustmaster's construction techniques.   Nothing about them seems slapped together, that's for sure.

My problem seems to be a break in the Pin 11 (white) wire, about
2-4" from the connector end of the wire.   If I place a jumper wire across this segment, I can get a signal from pin 11 on the other end of the white wire.   What a strange place for a failure to occur!

I think I'm going to have to get a new game port connector and wire it in, or replace the whole cable.

I'm fairly certain you can get a new cable from TM. (I just bought new pots for all my gear).

If not, (or, if yer cheap like I am), Rob a cable off of an old JS. It doesnt matter if it has 9 wires or not. Just ohm out the Red and White wires on your existing cable to get the pin numbers, Then just hook up the same two wires (regardless of color) from the new[er] cable.

While you're at it, you may as well dismantle and clean the pot, or replace it.

Good luck!
