"Exotic" Ordinance...?
« on: August 05, 1999, 07:02:00 PM »
What kind of weapons other than guns, gun pods and bombs will be modelled?
Any plans to model more "exotic"  stuff like the 262s anti buff rockets or glide/skip bombs?

How about the 40mm mortar the ME-262 and I thing ME-163 Komet had, the would launch them into Bomber formations.

Well, Bf 110G-2 would not be perfect without ruztsatz which added 'schräge musik' (jazz music) ie. up and forward firing 2 X 20 mm MG FF cannons.

Imagine creeping to belly of unsuspecting terror bomber and then calmly kill his all engines one by one and see the wreck falling from the sky...

Oh sorry, I think I just come.

Well actually "schräg" means "oblique", which is a jeut des mots cause "schräg" has several meanings. First of all it denoted the way in which the cannons were firing of course: up and forward.
"Schräge Musik" in its original meaning describes unpleasent, weird music or music that is badly played.
So if you don t like Jazz, I guess your translation IS a correct one

Actually that was a 40mm AT gun on the 262!  It was also used on the Me 410.

There were also rockets of many types used on the 262 and other planes, including some with guidance systems.  MUAHAHAH.

in my book 'Fighting Aircraft of WWII' it said that one ME262A model had a 50mm BK 5 gun on it. It also says that the ME262E model could be fitted with a 50mm MK 114 gun or A-2-A rockets and the ME262B-2a model had the MK108 behind the cockpit in the Schrage Musik configuration.

Yeah joness, I remember seeing a picture of that 262 with the  50 mm gun barrel sticking out of its nose. That must ve been a HUGE gun, the muzzle break looked like the ones they use on tanks.

Napalm would be great for ack, hangars, troops, setting small vilages ablaze, etc. If the graphics were really great it would make a very cool addition to the available armament.

I know napalm was deployed on the F4U, P-51 etc. - how about other nations (axis). Was the US the only armed force to use napalm on a large scale during WWII?

They did not use napalm from the airplanes in WWII, but they often dropped their fuel tanks on target and then ignited the fuel with bullets.

That's incorrect miko. I have footage of F4U-1D's dropping napalm I believe as early as 1944. OTOH I've NEVER heard of someone dropping a fuel tank then igniting it with bullets.

That's one wild anecdote!

Actually Windle, I have heard of the dropping of fuel tanks on targets, too. Supposedly, as an example, I remember mention of P47's dropping them on trains, then trying to start them on fire. How the hell they ever aimed the things I don't know, or how wide-spread the practice was. It may have been more wishful thinking of the pilots than anything, but nevertheless, I have heard of it.

Definately creative on the part of those pilots. Would have been interesting to watch

Anyone have an idea exactly when Napalm was first used in the field. I cant remember the name of the island but I have footage of F4U's taking off and dropping napalm on enemy so close that the planes still had their gear down! The Japanese were attacking the airfield itself and the planes were dropping landing loading and dropping again. Lots of great improvisation going on during the war
