Texture Problems
« on: March 02, 2003, 07:17:33 PM »
I have spent the last couple of days trying to make textures in photo shop 6 for some aces high ground object and also ac.

But every time i try to convert the picture from 32 bit into the standard 8 bit, 256 color textures that aces high accepts i get errors with picture fading and everthink else.

I have tried working with the original saved textures that aces high saves in the TE but I cant choose any color system, or the color and my tools in photo shop dont work correctly.

Can anyone suggest a good 256 bit color software package that comes with shareware that i may try out, because i am having a hard time trying to get textures to look good in aces high.

Thanks Chad.

Fixed the problem i was having with my photo shop.

For future reference this is what i do.

I get the picture from aces high.

I open it up in photo shop

"Duplicate" from the "Image" menu

Choose "Image>Mode" menu

"Convert" the duplicate image to 8-bit/channel Indexed

Choose OS/2 Image format ( this changes the image alittle )

wonce it is on 8 bit channel i can change doing the same method from RGB Color system back to Index color without losing any quality in the image from bluring and also lighting effects.

I am not a image exspert but this some how gets the job done :).

I don't have a paint program other than Windows Paint.

This is a good little program, converts 24bit to 8bit etc, greyscale, saves as jpeg, bmp, and much more.

Sometimes the irfanview doesn't make the image clear enough especially if you where working with Plane Skins, so I've tried this program.  I don't have an example to show you what I mean.

A little help file that I put together,

You may need to right click on this link and save target as ... to download it...  don't know why?

I have noticed similar colour fading and changing when using PSP under certain colour reduction methods. You just have to find the one that works best for you.

Attached my PSP7 reduction settings. It's just trial and error.

In PSP I use Optimized Median Cut, Nearest color and reduce color bleeding is un-checked. Guess it's a matter of preference. :)

When converting in Photoshop, use..

Palette - Local (Selective)
Colors - 256
Forced - Primaries
Matte - (no choice here - should be grayed out)
Dither - Diffusion
Amount - 75%

You can also try checking the "Preserve exact colors" box. But that usually isn't needed.
