Alright, know I am getting old now.
« on: March 09, 2003, 04:11:58 AM »
First, I have this hot date. Spanish parents, gorgeous eyes and everything. We go to a party that stinks and end up on the Meatmarket downtown. Meet some ex classmates (also females) and manage to lose my date somehow. toejame.

Wake up day after. And the day after that. Two days of hangover from one bottle of vodka. Unbelievable.

But survivable. What is worse is that I am preparing for the climbing season in the summer, which means lots of weight and agility training.

And my body just doesn't recouperate as it used to. Sure, am getting lean and defined - but the price I pay for it. Nutrient additions doesn't help. Ugh, sore and outta energy. And then these really big guys take like three times what I can on the bench press. Depressing.

I dinnae think it'd go downhill that quickly body wise. Dinnae think the difference between 20 and 30 would be that noticeable if you stayed in decent shape. But am finding that the body reacts *way* differently to hard conditioning now compared to 7 years ago. Have to cut back on intensity, which means result take longer to show. Which means my hot date with Spanish parents won't be able to wash her smallclothes on my abs for another two months.

Oh yay, life can be cruel.

Then I realize that Ripsnort, Creamo, funked, Toad and Hangtime are older than me, and always will be. And I smile, a little.

Heh. :D

LOL! I know that I learned the difference during that 28-32 period.  When I thought I was still a kid, and my body was telling me that I was NOT ! ;)

Ah, but we have learned to age gracefully, grasshopper.

Grow old along with me!
The best is yet to be,
The last of life, for which the first was made:
Our times are in his hand
Who saith, 'A whole I planned,
Youth shows but half; trust God: see all, nor be afraid!'

Robert Browning - my father's favorite. He still quotes it to my Mom at age 82.

Smile brother......... you woke up this morning so you're WAY AHEAD of an awful lot of other folks.

Old?  Don't think you have any idea what you're talking about Santa.

When you get old, you find its not the drinking you're good at, its the hangover remedies you've gotten great at.  Hell, after time you'll have a pre-drunk checklist that you use to avoid those killer hangovers.  1 gallon of water - check, 2 aspirins - check, direct unobscured path to bathroom - check, more water and aspirin for tomorrow - check.

Eventually, you'll start comparing notes with your friends as they too grow older.  You'll start to realize that everything you do physically will have a toll on you tomorrow.  Playing basketball with the friend... toll, running just a tad longer/faster than you usually do... toll,  making love to a woman for 5 straigh hours... toll (though moreso on her... which makes you feel younger).

Yeppers... that day is coming.

ROFL Santa! Hehe, and some of those farts are older than me. :D

If I were to have written the initial post to this thread, the list of names at the end would have to include: AKDejaVu/MiniD, SOB, Lazs2, GTOR32, Animal - nothing to do with age. Just a list of friends who can be a pain in the arse sometimes. ;)

Don't give up just yet.

When I turned 40 I realized that I was never going to lose the weight I had picked up over the years nor would I ever be as fit as I used to be unless I started something drastic. I used to swim compeditively 21 years ago but had not trained a day since.

So I began swimming at 6 am each day. I started with 8 lengths in a 25 meter pool in November. After the 8 I was exhausted and wanted to puke. Now I can swim a mile in 25 minutes effortlessly. I can swim a 400 in 6 minutes and an 200 in 2:40, a 100 in 1:10 and a 50 in 31 seconds.

Each week almost my times are dropping. I am loseing about a pound a week as well.

I am even ranked in the top 10 for my age group in the 400 and 800 meters.

I hope in a year of training to have my 400 m time down to 5 minutes and my mile down to 20 minutes. I have a meet coming up in a couple of weeks and hope to break 30 seconds for the 50 m and 1:05 for the 100 m. I do not see why I will not be able to make these goals based on the improvement I am seeing now.

Sure I will probably never make my personal best time for the 50 or 100 again but then again I could not swim a mile back then in the time I am doing now.

:D

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Sandman, I ain't 30 yet. Gonna be 28 on July 23rd.

It's just that nowadays thigs sorta hurt that used to not hurt. And nowadays I have to worry about a hot date having a kid and an insane ex boyfriend.

And I really was surprised to learn that my body couldn't be pushed as hard anymore - sure peak performance short term is the same, but restitution is something else alltogether.

And wrinkles. I smile/smirk a lot, and it's beginning to show.

This getting older business is very depressing. Heh, and Toads 'age with grace' sentence can be used to fertilize an entire golf course :D.

Ain't no advantage to getting older, except getting wiser. And the wiser you get, the more you understand that youth is wasted on the young. And the more you want to NOT be as old as you are and certainly not get any OLDER.

Oh sigh.

Heh

Habu, might start swimmng myself again, for the aerobic training. I hate jogging. How long did it take you to get in a decent swimming-state? Me, I'd prolly drown after 8 times back and forth. Which is sort of sad, since I'm a scuba diver. To my defense; haven't been out diving since my dry suit got busted up.

That's even more hilarious... :D

Still... Ah fill yur pine... A few years ago... I was 38 and playing in a men's roller hockey league in Bakersfield. Then, I really felt old. Most of the people playing were under twenty five. They were fast and strong and hot headed.

So... In-between games I started running and lifting again...

It was all worth it by the end of the season... this 19 year old forward was coming at me fast and hard... puck tick tacking between his stick while I backskated between him and the net... He got about eighteen inches away from me when I punched him in the chest with my left hand. The puck went slipping out as he fell over.

Age and treachery helps too... ;)
