Only early Japanese aircraft lacked armor. Both of the Japanese aircraft we have here had some armor, in the case of the N1K2 about as much as you'd get on a British, American, German or Russian fighter.
Hellcat pilots would describe fights in which the Zero they'd been engaging just would not catch fire. The reason was that they were fighting N1Ks, J2Ms and various Ki fighters that had armor, not Zeros.
The stereotype of all Japanese aircraft lacking armor is a myth.
