I do realize that most Level I Trauma Centers like to boast the fact they are L-I, but the sick people will not go there. Just a clarification!:D

I use the "Level 1 Trauma center" as an example that it is a state hospital that is not taking this lightly nor are the employees.  Being a Level 1 trauma center means being equipped to handle the most serious type of injury at any time. To receive Level 1 verification, a hospital must undergo a rigorous evaluation and meet precise criteria defined by the American College of Surgeons in areas such as:

Emergency room facilities
Operating room facilities
Intensive care units
Laboratory services
Post-anesthesia care
Rehabilitation care

My sources tell me that they are basically using the same "plan" and procedure as they would in a smallpox or anthrax outbreak, that is, only 2 Physicians, one RN in the room that is isolated from the rest of the hosital.  Scarey stuff if you speak with the nurses down there as I do.

Since I have no medical degree I have to trust the experts. If they're worried then I'm worried. Sounds like there are a lot of people at risk.

The problem with the flue is that it regularly mutates. There is a "antigenic drift" every 2-3 years which causes epimia. Every 10-40 years there are bigger changes, "antigenic shift", caused by reassortment betweent other species, which cause pandemia with millions of dead. There were 4 Pandemia in the 20th century.

- already mentioned was the spanish pandemia (H1N1 virus) which caused 20 mio dead
- 1957 Asia pandemia (H2N2) and 1968 Hongkong pandemia (H3N2)
- 1977 Russian pandemia (H1N1)

1997 totally new subtype of Influenza A Virus appeared in the Hongkong epipemia

ther is no cure against viruses

... not true - there are a couple of antiviral treatements out there which work against certain types of Influenza when applied within the first 24-48 hours. (e.g. Neuraminidase inhibitors, Amantadin and Rimantadin)

---

SARS has not been specified yet but we will hear about it as ssoon as they know more - by chance this week since we'll have lecture with a leading infectionologist in Switzerland.

Personally I think there is no reason to panic... but people like those big catastrophes on tv - while obesity, smoking and traffic kills millions in the meanwhile...

SARS BUG DEADLIER THAN AIDS SAYS DOC Apr 24 2003

A LEADING doctor has warned the SARS virus could be more devastating than AIDS.

Dr Patrick Dickson called on world governments to act to stamp out the threat from the deadly respiratory illness.

Dr Dixon, one of Europe's experts on predicting global trends, said it could be more dangerous than AIDS because of its ability to spread quickly.

He said: "It is worth remembering that AIDS has infected 80 million people so far over 15 to 20 years.

"AIDS spreads slowly so we can track it and plan for it. We have effective anti- viral drugs which can prolong life.

"But this is different, we don't have the time. This is a far more serious epidemic potentially than AIDS."

Dr Dixon said his main concern was rural, isolated areas in China and around the world.

He added: "In a country like India, which is chaotic with minimum health provision, the potential for spreading the virus is huge."

Dr Dixon, a fellow at the Centre for Management Development at London Business School, said if current trends continued, there could be a billion cases within 60 weeks.

He has called on world leaders to address the problem as a matter of "national security".

The Government yesterday advised Britons not to travel to Toronto, Hong Kong and the Chinese provinces of Guangdong, Beijing and Shanxi because of SARS.

Toronto is the first location outside Asia added to the list.
