To Lazs and the rest of the furballers (apology)
« on: March 29, 2001, 12:30:00 PM »
Lazs and any other dedicated furballers:

I've been a long time strat player in AH (since beta) and I've always disliked seeing the llamas, furballers, etc doing what I thought was "goofing off" at the expense of the people trying to make some strategic difference for our country.   I've been more than vocal about it on the message boards and my country channel.

I recently got my best friend to try AH (he doesn’t have a computer but I have several so he plays at my house).  While my friend has the basics of the game down, he in no way cares about strategy, bombing anything (not even JABO), all he wants to do is get in his favorite low alt furball planes, fly to the closest fight and fight till he dies (he only lands if he runs outta fuel or ammo).   My friend fly’s exactly the way the people I’ve come to dislike in the game.

Ok Ok to the point…
I tried what I thought was “mindless furballing” last night for 6 hours straight and I had a blast!  I got more fighter perk points in the 6 hours last night than I have in the last week.  My friend is considering a paid account even though he doesn’t have a computer and wants to furball 3-4 days a week!!

While I’m sure I’ll never give up on the strat playing I now understand why some of the vets here furball and forget about the strat altogether.  So from now on you wont hear me/see me post about furballing in a negative way.

Lazs: I may not agree with most of your ideas for the main arena but I understand now how fun furballing can be.

Salute!

Mox

Great post Mox.

It really doesn't matter which type of play you enjoy.  The trick is that no style of play is "better" than the other.  I'm glad you've seen that light. <G>

well.... I appreciate what you are trying to say but, and don't take this wrong but.... i don't really care what you think about furballing or about strat.

I don't care if you like the way I like to play the game or not, only that you allow me to do so.

I don't care about strat but I do want more players in the game and I really do want as much choice for EVERYONE as possible.   What I really dislike is when I am being told that I am having fun but that I just don't know it or that there is plenty of oportunity for me to enjoy my way of playing in the current arena and that it is just my imagination that closed fighter ops for 3 sectors, no fuel, lopsided numbers, and no radar spoil the arena for me.

Where the conflict comes in is when the strat guys percieve that (as you say) the furballers are lazy goofoffs (we are) and that if we are not "forced" in some way to participate in the strat then we will ruin their game.

But it can work out for both advocates..Think about it... If the fields were a little harder to knock out fighter ops or.... the fields were a lot easier to close (with fighter ops being the last thing) then everyone would be, witingly or unwitingly, participating in the strat since that would be where the action was.   You wouldn't even be able to tell who was a strat guy and who was a furballer.

right now the strat is very lopsided and seems to favor a risk free gangbang atmosphere.   Your choices most of the time are to either be gangbanged or to do the gangbanging.  With larger numbers of attackers and defenders all concentrated the gangbanging goes down.

right now I watch the team with the largest numbers attack in masse and drop the fighter hangers first thing then hover over the field with vastly superior numbers killing anyone left or that may come dribbling in.  The bombers continue on, dropping fighter hangers at several more undefended fields.   The new guys I know consider this really boring and I agree.

You may have noticed. Lazs, without a doubt is the best complement receiver in AH

<Lephturn sneaks up behind Lazs with a burlap bag, jams it over his head, and tapes him up, then drags him out of the bar by his feet.>

You have enough arena debates going lazs, no need to hijack this thread.

Lazs, this is UBB, not Furball Arena.

Never saw such a 100% dedicated furballer.

Cheers,

Nice post, Mox.

I can understand the Strat players frustration at poorly co-ordinated play. At the same time, I'm usually just up for a quick flight, and I thouroughly enjoy the incompetance shown in base capture some times, as it leads to extended furballs.

I've always viewed melee arenas as practise arenas, "full real" training arenas, if you will. It's unrealistic to expect so many people "just logging on for their fix" to co-ordinate thier efforts for some greater plan.

That's why I'm a furballing scenario junky. Scenario's are the time when one can totaly expect to take part in a structured and co-ordinated team effort, with clearly defined roles (never a need to squelch ch 1.), and it's where all the skills so duly honed in the arenas are put to the test.

Anything else is just practise, as some fat guy used to say.

well... ur right wizz... compliments don't mean dick to me.  I don't need or want anyones approval about the way I like to play this game.   Compliments without action are worthless.

It is fine to say that you approve of my type of fun and that you can even enjoy slumming on occasion yourself... But it is meaningless.

What I am advocating is the opportunity to furball.   I may even be wr.. wro... wrong...  Maybe more people like what passes for strat than furballing in this game.  I tend to think tho that when the arena has the opportunities for it a whole lot of people enjoy furballing.   I think fear of this is what drives some of the more adamant oppositition to reasonable comprimise.  I also think the new arena slant is not condusive to getting new players.. I want new and large numbers of players.  If "vets" cause this to not happen then I can live without "vets".

I also cannot return the compliment.   What passes for strat in this game is not fun for me.   It is boring and it is so simplistic and concession ridden that it is embarassing to participate in.   The "simulation" part is in the furballing.   The gunnery, damage, flight models etc.  Nothing about the strat has anything to do with a simulation of anything that I know of.  It is like there are two different games.... One with realistic elements and one hashed together gimicky board game.

apolodgies are worthless to me too.  If you don't say stupid toejam then you don't have to apolodgize.  If I find I have come around to someones point of view that I formerly opposed I WILL SIMPLY ADVOCATE THE NEW VIEW.

so... don't apolodgize and don't compliment.... Just give your honest opinion and then... Throw me/us a bone.  Give us something useful.

And lep... what is this thread about?   for the life of me i can't figure it out but since it had my handle in the subject it was a good opportunity to pontificate.

Heh if someone gets pissed over one sort of players way of flying, and then whines about his way of flying not being respected, I usually ignore that someone.

"boooh, you ruined my furball by killing the fh's, now I have to LAND and go to ANOTHER fight" is even worse than

"you %&/%/¤ furballers, TAKE the field already!"

There's a time for furballing, and there's a time for taking field. Taking fields is a necessity (the way I fly anyhow) when yer down to two bases or the dar is always down.

Do what you want.
