A-10 / OA-10 Fact Sheet
Here's what I have, and its interesting...
According to the book, Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II by Peter C. Smith,
"The core of the A-10's deadly firepower is the A/A 49E-6 gun systen, which has a gross weight of 4,200lb."
"The titanium armored amunition drum, holding 1,174 rounds of ammunition"
"Powered by dual hydrolic rotary motors, each barrel rotates through the firing chanber with rate of fire settings of 2,100RPG or 35 rounds per second, and 4200 rpg, or 65 rounds per second."
"Minimum life expectancy for each set of gun barrels is 21,000 rounds"
Strange really. If you multiply the rounds per second by 65, you get 3900 rounds per minute.
Yet the author uses 4200, which would require a 70 rounds per second rate of fire to achieve.
So not only do our sources contradict each other, the author contradicts himself. I would really like to get the final answer from an A-10 driver.
